Facebook stock down after post-IPO lock-up expires

(AP) ? Facebook's stock price fell Wednesday, the day employees were eligible to start selling restricted stock in the company.

A lock-up period that had prevented such sales expired on Monday. U.S. stock markets opened on Wednesday for the first time since Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast, so that's when employees could start selling.

In all, 234 million additional shares and stock options held by employees as of Oct. 15 became eligible to flood the market. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is not selling. He has already said that he won't be selling stock until at least next September.

Lock-ups are common after initial public stock offerings and are designed to prevent a stock from experiencing the kind of volatility that might occur if too many shareholders decide to sell at once.

Facebook's stock hasn't done well since its IPO in May amid concerns about its ability to keep growing revenue. But it saw its biggest one-day gain last Wednesday after posting strong third-quarter results. The day before, Facebook detailed for the first time how much money it makes from mobile ads. Mobile had been a concern since before the Menlo Park., Calif., company's IPO.

The next lock-up expiration comes on Nov. 14, when 777 million shares and stock options will become eligible to be sold.

Facebook Inc.'s stock is down 78 cents, or 3.6 percent, to $21.16 in midday trading. The stock is still down 24 percent from its IPO price of $38.

Honda introduces car designed just for women

The TODAY anchors, along with Billy Bush and Kit Hoover of "Access Hollywood Live," talk about the new Honda Fit She's, a car designed specifically for women that will feature a windshield to help prevent wrinkles and will come in the color pink.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

The auto industry has traditionally been male-dominated but Honda has rolled out a new model it claims to have specifically designed with women in mind.

The new Honda Fit She?s is a pretty-in-pink version of the maker?s familiar subcompact that offers a few niceties the maker believes will specifically appeal to distaff buyers, such as a windshield designed to block skin-wrinkling ultraviolet rays.

But will women actually care? While the new Honda subcompact may be the only car currently on the road specifically targeting women there?s a good reason.? Previous feminine offerings, such as the old Dodge LaFemme, met with little more than indifference and, in some cases, outright hostility.

Toyota Back on Track as Global Sales Leader

Priced at $17,500 ? at current exchange rates ? the Honda Fit She?s is currently available only in the Japanese market and it?s unclear whether the maker will roll it out in other parts of the world.

Like those vehicles handed out as prizes by Mary Kay Cosmetics, the dominant shade is pink, starting with the exterior pain and including the interior pink stitching and tutti-frutti-hued chrome bezels. If that doesn?t get the message across, Honda uses a pretty little heart to replace the apostrophe in ?She?s.?

To Honda?s credit, the maker also has plans to offer the special model in an alternate hue that might best be called ?eyeliner brown.?

The Fit She?s also delivers some other features women might appreciate.? That includes the special UV-blocking window glass.? Recent studies have underscored concerns that extended exposure to the sun while driving can be nearly as bad for the skin as spending too much time on the beach.?

Iconic London ?Black? Cab Could Soon Vanish

The Honda Fit She?s also features a ?Plasmacluster? climate control system the maker claims can improve skin quality.

The decision to offer the car in the Japanese market isn?t all that much of a surprise considering the country?s more traditional sex-defined roles. As much as half of all Japanese women stay out of the workforce and still more tend to shift to homemakers after getting married. But even for those women who do join the workforce, there is? more of a divide in tastes than one might find in Western countries.

That has stifled efforts by European and U.S. manufacturers who previously tried to target products directly to women.? Chrysler, for one, thought it had a winner with the 1955 LaFemme. The sedan featured special storage places for hat and purse ? and the driver?s seat swiveled to allow a woman wearing a skirt to enter or exit the vehicle with appropriate modesty.? Nonetheless, like the few other offerings openly aimed at American women over the years, LaFemme proved LaFlop.

One might think that the U.S. auto industry would be inspired by the Honda Fit She?s. After all, women now directly purchase over a third of the vehicles sold in the States, while data from J.D. Power and Associates suggests they ?influence? as much as 60% of all vehicle purchases.

Honda Tells Dealers, Clear Out Old Civic for ?Emergency Refresh?

Yet, just the hint of being a ?woman?s car? can prove the kiss of death.? Despite their tremendous flexibility and functionality, minivans lost much of? their cache, noted Nissan marketing executive Tom Smith, when they become known as ?soccer-mom vehicles.?? Chrysler tried to counter that image when it released its latest? version of the Dodge Durango by dubbing it the ?man van,? but with little success.

Volkswagen blames the fall off in sales of the so-called ?New Beetle? to the fact that the vehicle became known as a ?chick car.? Jonathon Browning, head of Volkswagen Group of America, says the maker specifically wanted to make the latest version of the Beetle, introduced a year ago, ?look more masculine.?

That doesn?t mean makers are ignoring the needs of women.? Both Ford and General Motors, among many makers, have established groups of women designers and engineers who specifically consider the features and attributes of new products looking for ways to appeal to feminine needs ? and avoid problems that might not be apparent to their male colleagues.

That might include door handles that can snap off long fingernails. And a number of new vehicles now feature larger center storage bins able to handle a pocketbook ? while men get the added benefit of being able to tuck away their iPads and other electronic goodies.

Some makers have also introduced new colors that they believe will have bigger appeal to women buyers ? though whatever their sex, studies by paint suppliers like DuPont Automotive show that silver, black and white continue to dominate.

So, while automakers clearly want to win over women shoppers, few are likely to follow Honda?s lead, especially outside of Japan.? In most of the rest of the world, women car buyers just wanted to be treated as one of the guys.

?Beetlejuice? sparks? Meteor shower brings 'shooting stars' and 'earthgrazers'

The increasing intensity of the annual Orionid meteor shower will be on full display Saturday night and Sunday morning as most of the US faces a cold, clear, moonless night ? the perfect celestial screen.

Projected clear skies and low moonlight across much of the country Saturday night and Sunday morning will help fans of celestial phenomena witness a peak of whizzing visitors across the sky as part of the annual Orionid meteor shower.

Sky gazers can expect as many as 60 meteors an hour as the earth crashes into icy remnants abandoned by Halley?s Comet when it shot by the planet in 1986. The meteor shower will originate near the orange-glowing Betelgeuse star that makes up the right shoulder of Orion (The Hunter), most easily found by his conspicuous belt of stars.

The objects are boulders of ice and rock breaking into the atmosphere at about 148,000 miles per hour. Most sizzle and burn, creating ?shooting stars? and even ?earthgrazers? that span the sky. Larger chunks may actually explode into fireballs loud enough to hear down here on earth.

(A large chunk of asteroid that entered the atmosphere and exploded just off the coast of northern California on Wednesday, in some cases shaking houses, was likely not part of the Orionids, NASA says.)

According to Weather.com, large sections of the Atlantic, the South, the Midwest, and Coastal West are likely to see crystal clear skies overnight. The moon has just begun to wax, meaning moonlight interference will be low.

Philosophers have long pondered the stars, but the Orionids usually inspire poetics even among the country?s most hardened space scientists. (For others who want to gush or chat, NASA will have its experts on hand starting Saturday night at this link.)

?The Orionid meteor shower isn?t the strongest, but it?s one of the most beautiful showers of the year,? says Bill Cooke, head of NASA?s Meteoroid Environment Office.

Tony Phillips, who blogs at spaceweather.com, explains why in a NASA post.

?The shower is framed by some of the brightest stars and planets in the heavens,? he writes. ?Constellations such as Taurus, Gemini, and Orion provide a glittering backdrop for the display. But that?s not all. This year, Venus and Jupiter have moved into position with Sirius, the Dog Star, to form a bright triangle in the eastern pre-dawn sky. On the morning of Oct 21st, blazing pieces of Halley?s Comet will cut straight through the heart of this celestial triad.?

NASA has a few suggestions for how to optimize the show. The best display is likely to be two hours before sunrise, when Orion will be straight overhead. The meteors will burst from near Betelgeuse, but will spray across the entire sky. And remember: don?t blink.

?Be prepared for speed,? says Mr. Cooke, according to NASA. ?Only the November Leonids are faster.?

ARLINGTON, Va.Rear Adm. Matthew Klunder, the chief of naval research, told a packed house at the Office of Naval Research (ONR) science and technology (S&T) conference this week that he intends to bring officials from the Navy, Marine Corps, industry and academia together on a quarterly basis, starting in 2013, to accelerate S&T efforts for the warfighter.

"We do this conference every two years, which is phenomenal and very valuableand probably not enough," said Klunder at the 2012 ONR Naval S&T Partnership Conference and ASNE Expo. "We're going to start providing a more helpful regular drumbeat. Every quarter, ONR is going to have a focused working forum with our industry and academic partners."

Klunder stressed the new meetings will be informal, intended to share ideas and concerns within the naval S&T community. "This will not be a conference," he said. "I'm talking bagels and coffee, and a few hours of shared time. Just a functional forum."

He emphasized the importance of collaboration in the successful development of new naval technologies, and their transition to the warfighter. The conference where he announced the new approach is itself a biennial event bringing together top military, scientific, industry and academic experts in matters related to science and technology and defense.

More than 1,500 stakeholders attended the event this year.

Klunder's keynote delivered an overview of ONR's missions and challenges, with updates on the focus areas of the Navy's S&T Strategic Plan. Those areas include: autonomy and unmanned systems; assured access to maritime battlespace; information dominance; platform design and survivability; power and energy; strike and integrated defense; warfighter performance; total ownership cost; and expeditionary and irregular warfare.

"We do look at developing leap-ahead, very cutting-edge opportunities, technologies that are 10-plus years away," he said. "But we're also looking at technology opportunities that will be complete in the next year or two, or three-to-five years."

In both cases, he said, the warfighter, and the taxpayer, will be best served by innovative, collaborative solutions from partnerships, drawing on strengths from industry, academia and the Navy and Marine Corps.

The need for successful S&T solutions is particularly acute in the context of global developments, he said, listing problems from proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and terrorist elements to climate change and budget pressures.

As the Department of the Navy's science, engineering, mathematics and technology (STEM) executive, Klunder closed his address by encouraging efforts to increase participation by young people in the fields of STEMwith the goal of nurturing future scientists.

"I implore you," he told the audience, "do not let a child come home from school and say that math or science isn't coolwe owe it to our nation's future."

###

ONR is the Navy's lead organization for STEM outreach.

ONR provides the science and technology necessary to maintain the Navy and Marine Corps' technological advantage. Through its affiliates, ONR is a leader in science and technology with engagement in 50 states, 30 countries, 1,035 institutions of higher learning and more than 900 industry partners. ONR employs approximately 1,065 people, comprising uniformed, civilian and contract personnel, with additional employees at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C.

MSN's exclusive Windows 8 page goes live

A few weeks back Microsoft said that with the launch of Windows 8, a new and?exclusive?MSN page would go live as well. It looks like the page is now up and running and you can find the site here. You need to have IE10 to be able to view the page and seeing that you can only get IE10, for the time being, with Windows 8, you must have Windows 8 installed to see the page.

The page is?designed?to present your?content?in a fluid and?dynamic?way that Microsoft says is comprehensive and fast. While each will have their own opinion of the site, if you are running Windows 8, you can access the page now.

As Microsoft builds awareness for Windows 8 and IE10, expect to see more of these "exclusives" pop-up as Microsoft builds momentum for its latest platforms.?

View: MSN Windows 8 Exclusive Page

Thanks for the tip?Matthew_Thepc!

8 iPad Tips and Tricks - Legal Productivity

So the iPad Mini is about to extend our choice of devices but really, how many screens does a person need? Three perhaps? How about the iPhone, Mac, and iPad.

Some are even going to two primary screens, forsaking their computer for the iPad, a device that?s no longer limited to simply playing games or consuming information like watching movies and browsing the internet.

Here are 8 tips to make your iPad use snappy and productive

1. Punctuation shortcuts ? Tap the spacebar twice to insert a period at the end of a sentence. Double click the Shift key for ALLCAPS. Quickly insert an apostrophe by flicking upward on the Exclamation Point key.

2. Improved Web browsing experience ? Ever wonder what the ?Reader? button in the Safari URL bar does when looking at a website on your iPad or iPhone? Click on it for an uncluttered, large-text, ad-free read.

3. Split keyboard ? If you?re holding the iPad with both hands and want to type, place two fingers on the keyboard and pull them apart. You can now easily type with your thumbs on the split keyboard. Pinch your figures together to revert to the full keyboard.

4. Group similar apps into folders ? Have screens and screens of apps? Reduce your scrolling to a couple of screens by creating folders. Like News, Social, Games, Travel, Tools, and Pics. To create a folder tap and hold on an app until they all start to jiggle, then drag the app icon into another app icon. A folder will be created with both apps and a default name based on an App Store category which you can rename.

5. Search for apps and more ? If you?re not enamored of folders, you can still find an app quickly by searching for it. Swipe the home screen to the right and enter the name of the app in the Spotlight Search box. You can also search emails, contacts, calendars, notes and more. Customize the search feature by going to Settings > General > Spotlight Search and restrict where it searches.

6. Quickly access open apps ? When you use an app, it remains open. Go to an open app quickly by double tapping on the Home button. A list of open apps will appear. While you?re at it, hold down on the app you no longer need until it begins to wiggle and close it out. Too many open apps can sap the battery.

7. Locate text on page ? On a Mac, you simply press the Command button and F key to search for text on a web page. On the iPad, click in the search box in the Safari browser and start typing. One of the options from the pull down menu that will appear is ?On This Page?.

8. Protect your data ? Set up the feature that erases all data from your iPad if it gets stolen. Go to Settings > General > Passcode Lock > Erase Data. Now, if someone fails to enter the correct password after 10 tries, all data is wiped from the device. Of course this only works if you already had the passcode feature enabled.

Other useful tips? Please share in the comments.

Tech Explainer: Why Windows 8 matters to publishers

So far, Windows hasn't really had much of an impact on publishers' lives. Windows Phone still has a minute share of the mobile market, and while many of your readers will be using a PC running Windowns - what browser they use makes more?difference these days.?

That however, looks like it is going to change. On?Friday October 26 Microsoft will launch the next version of Windows 8 - its latest operating system for desktops and tablets - and the following Monday it will launch Windows Phone 8.

The reason this is important is that all the signs are Windows 8 will give Microsoft the right product to begin making more of an impact on the tablet and mobile markets and in tablets and mobiles, operating system matters a lot more for publishers.

Here are?five things you need to know about what Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 mean for your business:

1. More Windows in the world:?Windows Phone hasn't made anything like the impact Microsoft has hoped. But there are signs Windows 8 might give it the momentum needed. Analysts Gartner and?IDC?have long been predicting Windows Phone will become a credible third ecosystem - they expect Windows Phone will either match or beat Apple's iOS to be in second place behind Google by 2016.?

-- Nokia is still relying entirely on Windows Phone 8, and?HTC has?recently?begun putting more effort?into the platform following the poor performance of its Android devices against Samsung.?There are also a?swathe of manufacturers?making Windows 8 tablets - including Microsoft itself with the?Surface.

Another, perhaps even more important reason why Windows Phone 8 will do well is that mobile operators?want a third ecosystem?to reduce their reliance on Apple especially, but also?Google. Microsoft will benefit from that desire.

That means there are likely to be?a lot?more Windows Phone devices out there over the next few months, and they won't be geared towards accessing your content through a browser, they will be looking for apps.

2. More apps, even on desktops:?Windows 8 comes with two choices of interface. The first is a traditional interface that works like an updated version of Windows 7 and is designed for use with a mouse. It has been widely?slated, but that isn't surprising. ?What Microsoft really wants is people to use the completely new Metro interface, which is optimised for tablets and looks a lot like the Windows Phone OS.?

Metro is app-oriented, and that means it will push users towards consuming your content on apps rather than through the browser?even while on a desktop.?That is good news if you've got a successful app you are making money out of, but not terrible news if you don't, because the browser will still be a core part of Windows 8.?

3. Windows Marketplace:?Microsoft's app store hasn't exactly made waves compared to Apple's App Store or Google Play, but that could be a good thing. There are 500,000 apps on Google Play, and more than 600,000 on the App Store, but?only 100,000 on Windows Marketplace. it's a?much less crowded market if you get in early, and if Windows 8 and its mobile counterpart takeoff, it could be a lucrative place to be hawking your wares.

?

4. Better together??Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 are?built using?the same underlying OS structure. They are designed to work together well - making syncing across devices and sharing?information?over the cloud far simpler and more?efficient.

It's similar to Apple's attempts to tie users into its ecosystem through iCloud. The difference is that while Apple is leveraging the popularity of the iPhone to get users to love their iPad and Mac, Microsoft hopes to use its dominance of the PC market to boost mobile sales and build a tablet business.

It will be?far easier to build apps that work on both Windows 8 and?Windows?Phone 8?- or at least to adapt an app made for one for the other.

5. Business focus:?If you're a B2B publisher then Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 are even more likely to be a big deal. Microsoft knows where its strengths are, and it is pushing Windows 8 on tablets and Windows Phone 8 as the mobile OS most suited to business users. The stranglehold of Microsoft Office looks set to continue in the workplace.

Whether or not Microsoft actually manages to deliver a better enterprise product than the iPad remains to be seen, but with Microsoft's stranglehold on business?many companies are expected to embrace Windows 8 on tablets and mobiles.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 22, 2012 Editors of a dozen prestigious scientific journals have just completed a highly successful two-week visit to India, where they met with more than 3,000 scientists and students to discuss publication of research articles about new scientific discoveries and other topics. The journals are among the more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific publications from the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world's largest scientific society.

"The international visit was spectacularly successful," said Anirban Mahapatra, Ph.D., of the ACS Journals Publishing Group, who was part of the ACS delegation. "Our editors were treated like rock stars by so many of the scientists and interested students in India. We were absolutely delighted to be able to share so much useful information with our colleagues and others in this great technological nation."

Susan King, Ph.D., senior vice president of the ACS Journals Publishing Group, noted that India is a powerhouse of science and technology, leading the way in fields such as renewable energy, nanotechnology, biotechnology and information technology. King, who also was part of the delegation of editors with other ACS Publications staff, commented that the size of India's technical workforce has doubled in recent years, with more than 160 universities awarding more than 4,000 doctoral degrees and 35,000 other postgraduate degrees annually.

Multivitamins May Help Prevent Cancer ? CBS Philly

Oct. 17, 2012 (Anaheim, Calif.) ? Taking a daily multivitamin for years may lower the risk of cancer, according to new research.

The study followed nearly 15,000 middle-aged and older men for about 11 years. It is not yet clear if the findings would apply to women or younger men.

?The main findings were a reduction in total cancers of 8%,? says researcher J. Michael Gaziano, MD, MPH, a researcher at Brigham and Women?s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

?Our main message is that the main reason to take a multivitamin is to prevent nutritional deficiency,? Gaziano said at a news briefing today at an American Association for Cancer Research meeting held here.

?It appears there is a modest benefit for cancer reduction in men over 50,? he said.

The findings are also published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Vitamins and Cancer Risk: Details

The men were enrolled in the Physicians? Health Study (PHS) II. It studied the long-term effects of taking a multivitamin on the prevention of chronic disease, including cancer.

In the study, about half of the 15,000 men took a daily multivitamin, Centrum Silver. The other half took placebo. When they started the study, they were 50 or older.

At the start, 1,312 men had a history of cancer, but none had active cancer.

The researchers tracked the men to see who developed cancers, except non-melanoma skin cancers.

Cancer by the Numbers

In the vitamin group, there were 1,290 cancers. In the placebo group, there were 1,379.

About half of the cancers in each group were of the prostate.

Those diagnoses, the researchers say, were probably influenced by the increase in screening for prostate cancer during the study.

Most of the prostate cancers were earlier stage, with high survival rates.

When the researchers looked at cancers overall, they found the 8% reduction. No effect of a vitamin was found on prostate cancer by itself.

When the researchers separated out the prostate cancers, they found a 12% reduction in the incidence of all other cancers.

The researchers found no differences in the risk of death from cancer between the groups.

Health behaviors that could affect cancer risk, such as smoking and exercise, were evenly divided between groups, Gaziano says.

Vitamins and Cancer Risk: Explaining Vitamin Effects

The study is the first large-scale study of multivitamins and cancer prevention, Gaziano says.

Earlier research focusing on high doses of specific vitamins, and their effects on cancer prevention, have had mixed results. Some have shown possible harm. The researchers can?t explain the anti-cancer effect they found with a multivitamin. ?We don?t know exactly how it works,? says researcher Howard Sesso, ScD, MPH, an epidemiologist at Brigham and Women?s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

The combination of vitamins and minerals may mirror the ingredients in a healthy, plant-based diet, the researchers say.

How long does it take for the cancer prevention effect to kick in?

?It looks like you need to take a multivitamin for several years if not a decade,? Sesso says, based on the study findings.

The researchers will report their study findings of the effects of vitamins on cardiovascular disease and other diseases later this year.

The researchers received research funding from the National Institutes of Health. They received vitamins or support from BASF Corporation, Pfizer, and DSM Nutritional Products Inc.

Vitamins as Cancer Fighters: Perspectives

The study helps clarify the potential role of multivitamins for cancer prevention, says Susan Gapstur, PhD, MPH, vice president of the American Cancer Society?s epidemiology research program.

?Results of previous trials of vitamin and or mineral supplementation for cancer prevention have been mixed, and some studies of individual nutrients have shown evidence of possible harm,? she says.

She also cautioned that the trial, although large, is just one study. ?Typically, we like to see these kinds of findings replicated by other studies, and in other populations, before coming to solid conclusions.?

The American Cancer Society recommends getting nutrients from a healthy diet. For those who choose a supplement, the best choice is a balanced multivitamin containing no more than 100% of the Daily Value of most nutrients, Gapstur says.
