Explosive attack on Kenya church kills 1 child

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? The acting police chief in Kenya's capital says an explosive device set off in a Sunday school class killed one child and seriously wounded three.

Moses Ombati said he suspects sympathizers with the Somali militant group al-Shabab were behind the attack at an Anglican church in Nairobi.

Kenya has seen a series of attacks on churches ever since Kenyan forces moved into Somalia to fight al-Shabab last year. Kenyan forces kicked the rebels out of their last stronghold, Kismayo, on Friday.

Grenades are often used in the attacks; Ombati is describing the cause of Sunday's attack as an explosive device.

One church member, Julius Macharia Maina, brought four children to the hospital. One child's head was cut open; the others had bruises. Maina described the attack "emotional and very scary."

(AP) ? There's nothing wrong with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots that a game against their familiar AFC East patsies ? the Buffalo Bills ? can't fix.

Not even after Brady and Co. spotted them a 14-point, third-quarter lead.

Brady responded by directing six straight touchdown drives in the second half on Sunday en route to a 52-28 blowout.

It was a game in which the Patriots (2-2) produced 580 total yards, forced six turnovers and avoided their first three-game losing streak in 10 years.

"Down 21-7 and on the road, backs against the wall, and I thought we showed a lot of heart," Brady said. "That's what this team is made of. And we're going to battle until the end, I know that."

Brady finished 22 of 36 for 340 yards and three touchdowns, plus one rushing. The 580 yards was the fourth-most in team history.

Cornerback Devin McCourty had two interceptions in keying a defense that forced six turnovers and had three sacks.

Running back Stevan Ridley scored twice. Wes Welker had nine catches for 129 yards, and tight end Rob Gronkowski had five for 104 yards and a touchdown as both players bounced back from first-half fumbles.

"You can't panic," Gronkowski said. "When you panic, nothing good happens from there. We just stuck to the game plan."

The comeback began immediately after Ryan Fitzpatrick hit Donald Jones for a 68-yard touchdown pass on the Bills first possession of the second half.

Brady responded with an eight-play, 80-yard drive by hitting Danny Woodhead for a 17-yard touchdown. After tying the game with a 4-yard run, Brady capped a five-play 63-yard drive by hitting Gronkowski with a 28-yard touchdown pass.

The Patriots scored 35 points in a span of 12:41 in building a 42-21 lead on Brandon Bolden's 7-yard run.

"We just played and executed better," coach Bill Belichick said. "It's no magic."

Magic no. Familiar, yes.

New England improved to 17-1 in its past 18 meetings against Buffalo, and 22-2 dating to the 2000 season. The Patriots lost their last trip to Orchard Park, 34-31 after blowing a 21-0 lead.

This time it was the Bills turn to unravel.

After Jones' scored, nothing else went right. Buffalo combined for two first downs and 31 yards on its next four drives, two of which ended with turnovers.

Bills coach Chan Gailey was embarrassed.

"I don't like to play like that, and I don't like to think that's who we are," Gailey said. "But that's who we were today. You can't sugarcoat it."

The news gets even worse as Buffalo enters a stretch in which it will play four of its next five on the road.

Starting left tackle Cordy Glenn and starting right guard Kraig Urbik both hurt their right ankles and did not return. Gailey said both could miss games.

The Bills offense sagged despite the return of its two top running backs. Fred Jackson had 29 yards rushing and 50 receiving in his first game back since spraining his right knee in a season-opening loss. Spiller had 33 yards rushing and 5 receiving after hurting his left shoulder in at Cleveland last weekend.

Both also fumbled, with Spiller's coming on a goal-line plunge late in the first quarter.

It was a dreadful outing for Mario Williams ? who signed a six-year, $100 million contract in March ? and the Bills high-priced defensive line.

Buffalo managed one sack. Otherwise, the defense gave up the second most yards in franchise history, and most points since a 56-10 loss to New England on Nov. 18, 2007.

"A loss is a loss. I don't label it anything," Williams said, when asked if it was embarrassing.

He placed the blame on the Bills inability to stop the run. Bolden had 137 yards rushing and Ridley 106.

"When you have two guys rushing for 100 yards, something's up," Williams said. "We have to have a reality check and see what's going on."

Fitzpatrick finished 22 of 39 for 350 yards and four scores ? including two to Scott Chandler.

The game had additional significance to the Patriots, as it featured the return of the NFL's regular officials after they reached a new eight-year agreement on Thursday. It came after Belichick was fined $50,000 by the NFL for grabbing an official's arm to question whether Justin Tucker's 27-yard field goal would be reviewed following a 31-30 loss at Baltimore last weekend.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft made sure to welcome back John Parry and his crew, by waiting in the tunnel following the game and attempting to shake each of the officials' hands as they made their way off the field.

Kraft then waited for Brady's arrival, and shook the quarterback's hand, as well.

The two then smiled and chatted in making their way to the locker room.

NOTES: Brady improved to 19-2 against the Bills, a stretch in which he has 49 touchdowns and seven 300-yard games. .... Buffalo's 4-22 in its last 26 games against division opponents. ... The win was the 194th of Belichick's career, moving him into eighth place on the NFL list, one ahead of Chuck Knox.

Greene celebrates all things apple in weekend festival

GREENE ? Greene?s Apple Fest has arrived and once again the Ball Flats will overflow with apple goodness. This Saturday marks the 26th year that Greene has hosted the Apple Fest, and a crowd of 10,000 is expected. It is a non-for-profit event and admission is free. Bands such as the Ben Rounds Band will be playing throughout Apple Fest, which will run as usual from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

David and Leslie Gorsline have taken the lead organizing this year?s Apple Fest after Greg Cobb stepped down as chairman last year.

?We started planning for this year?s Apple Fest right after the last one,? said David Gorsline. Even though this is the couple?s first year leading the organization of Apple Fest, they have both been involved in the event for over a decade ? Leslie her entire life. They, along with most of the usual organizers from the United Methodist Church in Greene, will be returning this year.

Pale blue dot or not? What the colour of alien worlds can tell us

The pale blue dot (click to get a bigger version). Earth, as seen by Voyager 1 in 1990 when it was around six billion kilometres away from us. Credit: NASA/JPL

Most people are familiar with the pale blue dot image of Earth taken by Voyager in 1990. Its blueness is significant, of course, because it is Earth?s abundant liquid water that makes it look that way.

But if you looked at the light that is reflected from Earth carefully, you would see several interesting features. One, caused by vegetation, is called ?red edge?. Green plants absorbs a lot of red light creating a big, sudden jump in reflectivity in the red bit of the visible light spectrum. An alien, if it could get a good look, would be able to tell than Earth had plenty of vegetation because of this red edge.

A paper recently uploaded to arXiv (accepted for publication in the journal Astrobiology) looks at what features, like vegetation, we might be able to discern on a planet outside of our solar system.

Siddharth Hegde and Lisa Kaltenegger at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany, then looked at how extremophiles ? creatures that live and even thrive in extreme conditions here on Earth ? might fare in the different kinds of habitat. ?Extremophiles provide us with the minimum known envelope of environmental limits for life on our planet,? the researchers say.

View of the Earth as seen by the Apollo 17 crew traveling toward the moon. Credit: NASA

I wrote about a similar topic at New Scientist in August when Hajime Kawahara at Tokyo Metropolitan University and Yuka Fujii at the University of Tokyo in Japan, published a paper that describes how they created 2D maps of what the light from an Earth-like planet would look like with various features on its surface (see ?Finding a Blue Marble? here). By watching a planet over time their technique is able to build up a more detailed image ? a blue marble, rather than a pale blue dot. Maps like these may one day provide us with an indication of what the environment is like on a faraway exoplanet.

Hegde and Kaltenegger?s paper covers a more rough and ready technique that could be a first step in deciding which exoplanets are the ones we should be studying in more detail ? the planets where organisms, albeit extreme ones, can survive here on Earth.

They note, however, that the characteristics of vegetation (or any organism with chlorophyll) could vary depending on their planet?s host star. The signature of chlorophyll near a hot star could have a blue, rather than red, edge to protect a plant?s leaves from overheating. Or on a planet that orbits a cool, dim star chlorophyll may appear black as it tries to absorb as much light as possible across the whole range of the visible spectrum.

A day where we have to use these techniques to decide which of an abundance of potential Earth 2.0s to travel to seems a long, long way away. But that doesn?t mean we can?t start daydreaming about which we will aim for first.

(Hat tip to Technology Review for flagging up the paper.)

iLuv iSP245 Mo'Beats Speaker Stand

There are plenty of Bluetooth speaker?options out there?some are spectacular, while some are pretty uninspiring. The iLuv iSP245 Mo'Beats ($99.99 direct) sits somewhere in the middle, delivering sound quality that suffers from heavy distortion at max volume, which itself isn't all that loud. Its saving grace is its sleek design, which also functions as a stand to prop up pretty much any tablet in both landscape and portrait orientations. It's best to think of the Mo'Beats as a miniature TV or movie viewing setup than a dedicated music playback speaker.?

Design
The iLuv Mo'Beats resembles a skinny aluminum barrel, measuring about 1.75 inches in diameter and 9.31 inches in length, with a small lip on the front for propping devices up. At 1.09-pounds, the Mo'Beats is not quite as portable as options like the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox ?or the Jawbone Jambox , but its solid aluminum frame and stand function make up for the added weight.

Inline

There are circular speaker grilles at either end of the barrel, while a black plastic protrusion on the back houses the On/Off switch, 3.5mm Aux jack, mini USB port, and a slide-out stabilizing bar for heavier and taller devices. The recess in the lip is about half an inch wide, making it suitable for even overly thick tablets, while embedded rubber pads help keep devices in place. There are no volume or playback controls, as everything is handled on the device. There is also no speakerphone like on the UE Mobile Boombox or Jambox.

Pairing the speaker with a Bluetooth device is simple enough; just flip the switch from Off to On and select the Mo'Beats on your device. The Mo'Beats can only pair with one device at a time, which is less useful than the Mobile Boombox, which can pair with up to eight devices at a time.

Performance
To put it bluntly, the iLuv Mo'Beats is not the speaker you want if high-quality audio is your biggest concern. It's louder, clearer, and has better stereo separation than the built-in speakers on most tablets, but that's really not saying much. Compared with alternatives like the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox, the Mo'Beats sounds pretty tepid. Not only does it distort heavily at high volumes, the volume itself isn't even all that loud. Bass is seriously lacking, and songs with heavy bass, like the Knife's "Silent Shout," suffer from unbearably crunched and distorted sound.

On more balanced tracks that don't go overboard with bass, and at moderate volumes, the Mo'Beats does a decent job, but still ends up sounding a bit too thin and treble-heavy for my taste. The vocals and guitar strumming on a track like "Babel" by Mumford & Sons sound a bit too harsh, while the cymbal crashes of the drums overpower the mix. Playing the same track back on the UE Mobile Boombox reveals just how much warmth is lost with the Mo'Beats.

It's not a dock, but its stand makes it a good option for a desktop mini home theater. For movie watching purposes, the speakers on the Mo'Beats actually do a respectable job. That same treble-heavy sound makes voices sound loud and clear. A trailer for The Avengers sounded exciting, with easy-to-hear dialogue and loud explosions that really popped. At the end, however, the score highlights lower register string instruments and percussion that became crunched and distorted at high volumes. If money is no object, the JBL OnBeat Xtreme ($499.95 direct) delivers powerful and high-quality audio, and it can also dock iPads in both vertical and horizontal orientations.

The iLuv iSP245 Mo'Beats isn't the best speaker for audio enthusiasts?not by a long shot. What it does offer is a useful stand that can boost the volume of your tablet, and its speakers do a good job for dialogue and background sounds in movies. The Logitech UE Mobile Boombox is still the Bluetooth speaker you want to get in this price range, but for those looking for an all-in-one stand and speaker solution, the Mo'Beats is, at least, a slick and well-built option.

Women clam up in meetings, study finds

Tetra Images / Getty Images

When attending meetings, women need to speak up more, a new study claims.

By Dana Macario, TODAY contributor

Women may be showing up for meetings, but that doesn?t necessarily mean they?re speaking up at those meetings.

In a recent study, researchers at Brigham Young University and Princeton University found that in a typical meeting where decisions get made, women are clamming up, speaking 25 percent less than their male counterparts.

The study, published in the American Political Science Review, found that when women find themselves in the minority they tend to keep their thoughts to themselves. Interestingly, when a guy is the token male in a group, he isn't at all likely to find himself tongue-tied.

While the decision to remain silent can be good if you?re ever arrested, if you?re hoping to be recognized as a leader, keeping your mouth shut is not such a smart choice. The study found that group members who had a lot to say were more likely to be seen as influential. So it comes as no surprise that with women talking less, fewer women were recognized as leaders.

?In school boards, governing boards of organizations and firms, and legislative committees, women are often a minority of members, and the group uses majority rule to make its decisions,? said study co-author Tali Mendelberg of Princeton. ?These settings will produce a dramatic inequality in women?s floor time and in many other ways. Women are less likely to be viewed and to view themselves as influential in the group and to feel that their ?voice is heard.??

Although women often freeze up in meetings where they?re in the minority and the group needs to arrive at a majority-rules decision, there are situations where women will open up and share their thoughts. ?Once women form the majority of the group, they?ll really start talking and will be more likely to assume leadership roles. Also, if a group has to arrive at a unanimous decision, women are again more likely to speak up. ?When a group has to reach a unanimous decision, women recognize that every vote is equally important, prompting them to feel the need to contribute something to the overall effort and discussion.

The study?s researchers noted that women not only flourished when the group had to build consensus, but discussions began to take a different tone as well. When women took more active roles, the whole vibe of the group changed. The researchers found those groups to be more positive, more inclusive and have fewer negative interruptions than the male-dominated discussion.

?Women have something unique and important to add to the group, and that?s being lost, at least under some circumstances,? said Chris Karpowitz, the study?s co-author and an assistant professor at BYU.

The study focused on 94 groups made up of five individuals each. Group members were asked to perform ?work? tasks to earn hypothetical amounts of money. Each individual was told they would take home earnings based on both performance and the group?s decision about how to redistribute the money earned as a whole. The groups were told to distribute the money in the ?most just? way. On average, groups deliberated for 25 minutes, even though they were only required to deliberate the distribution system for five minutes. Participants voted by secret ballot, but half of the groups followed majority rule while the other half decided only with a unanimous vote.

Not only did the tone of the discussions change when women participated more, but the substance of the discussions shifted as well. When given the task of setting a group?s minimum wage, women tended to include discussions of family need and issues of care in the discussions. Researchers noted that women were more likely to ask questions like, ?How does this affect a family?? or ?How would a single woman do this?? And, what they were saying wasn?t just girl talk; girl action took place as well. Groups with a majority of women and groups led by consensus building were more generous with their reallocation of money.

?When women are silent, they?re not just silent and someone else is making the argument they would have made anyway,? Karpowitz said, recognizing the loss of ideas when women fail to give their input.

Dana Macario is a Seattle-area writer.

Sennheiser announces U 320 gaming headset | Expert Reviews

Audio specialist Sennheiser has officially announced a new universal U 320 gaming headset, promising compatibility with the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, Mac and PC platforms.

Designed to provide comfort during extended gaming sessions, the U 320 uses an open-acoustic design to create a broader sound - an improvement over full closed-ear headphones - while the 'CircleFlex' soft-padded ear pads are designed to adjust automatically the the contour's of the listener's head. Weighing 284g and with a Frequency response rated at 15-23,000Hz, it's well equipped for gaming audio.

The built-in noise-cancelling microphone designed to cut out ambient sounds for improved recording clarity - a key feature of headsets designed for in-game voice chat - includes an automated mute function which kicks in when the microphone's boom-arm is raised. A volume control is included on the cable, providing control of both the earphone volume and the microphone volume, while a side-tone switch allows the player to monitor his or her voice while playing.

The headset's biggest feature is its promise of cross-platform compatibility. Unlike some gaming headsets, which need to be purchased for a specific platform, Sennheiser's U 320 is compatible with all major gaming platforms including the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and PC.

"The U 320 ensures the best conditions for enjoying your favourite game," Christian Ern, Sennheiser's product manager, said at the unveiling. "We've worked hard to develop a consistent sound, regardless of the platform, and believe that our efforts will contribute to players everywhere enjoying a better sound experience."

A 4m cable with 2.5mm connector for use with the Xbox should be long enough for most armchair gamers, a pair of RCA jacks for connection to a TV or games console and USB connectivity for the PlayStation 3, PC or Mac.

The Sennheiser U 320 is launching this month, priced at ?109.99.

BlackBerry maker's outlook brightens, but risks remain: analysts

(Reuters) - Research in Motion Ltd's turnaround potential has improved after the struggling BlackBerry maker's better-than-expected quarterly results, analysts said, with one summarizing his view by saying "the patient has a heartbeat."

Analysts said risks remained, with the company's future riding on the release of its BlackBerry 10 model early next year, but an improved cash position provides breathing room.

National Bank Financial upgraded RIM's stock, while BMO Capital Markets and Barclays Capital were among brokerages that raised price targets on the company's shares.

RIM not only reported a smaller-than-expected loss for the second quarter, it beat market estimates for revenue and shipments while arresting its cash burn ahead of the crucial launch of BlackBerry 10. Subscriber numbers also rose in the quarter, surprising analysts.

"This performance is nothing short of shocking as RIM has found a formula to entice its global carrier customers to sell (its) product," said National Bank Financial's Kris Thompson.

RIM is offering aggressive pricing for its BlackBerry 7 and may be discounting on network service fees, Thompson said.

Thompson, who is rated five stars by Thomson Reuters StarMine for the accuracy of his estimates on RIM's earnings, upgraded the stock to "outperform" and increased his price target on the stock to $12 from $8.

The analyst said he expected RIM's management, which has succeeded in maintaining the company's subscriber base, to continue with steps to sustain that base ahead of the launch of the next-generation BlackBerry early next year.

Until Thursday's results, RIM was increasingly being written off by analysts because of its failure to keep pace with innovations from rivals such as Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co.

"While RIM delivered marginally better results, we believe it is still too early to get constructive," said Phillip Huang of UBS Investment Research, in a note titled "Not Out of the Woods Yet; 1Q13 Key". RIM is expect to launch BlackBerry 10 in the first quarter of the new year.

Huang, who has a neutral rating on the stock, did not change his view or price target of $9.50.

BMO analyst Tim Long, who said RIM continues to incur meaningful costs to sell older and uncompetitive products, said the company's fate now hinged on BlackBerry 10.

"The app line-up for BB10 still appears very weak, particularly when compared to (Apple's) iOS and (Samsung's) Android," said Long, who raised his price target to $8 from $7.

Barclays raised its target to $7 from $6.

William Blair and Co's Brian Nugent, while detecting RIM's "heartbeat", said he was maintaining his "market perform" rating. "...Nothing led us to be incrementally positive, and we continue to believe that company's structural challenges persist," he said.

RIM's Nasdaq-listed shares shot up more than 20 percent to $8.60 in extended trading on Thursday, and were trading around that level before the bell.

German police: Woman suspected of killing 5 babies

BERLIN (AP) ? A 28-year-old woman in Germany has been charged with five counts of manslaughter on suspicion she killed her five children shortly after they were born, police said Thursday.

The case had been under investigation for years, starting after an infant's body was found in a paper sorting station near the northern city of Flensburg in 2006. A second body was found in a parking area off a regional highway in 2007.

Police said the woman turned herself in after they took a DNA sample, and confessed to killing the children, who were born alive. She was charged Wednesday with a total of five counts of manslaughter on suspicion she killed three of her other newborns as well.

Further details were not immediately available but police were to hold a press conference later on Thursday.

The woman's identity was not released in accordance with German privacy laws.

There have been several cases in recent years in Germany of women who have killed several of their own children, though the country's infanticide rate overall is similar to other western European nations.

In the worst case, a woman was convicted of manslaughter in 2006 and sentenced to the maximum 15 years in prison for killing eight of her newborn babies and burying them in flower pots and a fish tank in the garden of her parents' home near the German-Polish border.

(AP) ? Look out, Alec Baldwin.

Edward Norton, Jonah Hill, Snoop Dogg and several other stars are slated to play in a celebrity tournament of the popular online game "Words With Friends" for charity. The celebs will begin facing off against each other in matches of Zynga's Scrabble-like word-building game on Thursday.

Norton, who is playing for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Fund, is confident that he will dominate the tournament, which also includes such celebrity players as Eva Longoria, Kristen Bell and John Legend ? but not Baldwin ? vying for $500,000 in prize money for their charities from American Express.

"I have to give myself time-outs on 'Words With Friends,'" said Norton in a telephone interview Monday. "I've gone through phases where I'm like, 'What am I doing? This is much too much of my day.'"

"Words With Friends" players will be able to join their favorite stars' teams during the "Words With Friends Celebrity Challenge," as well as watch the celebrity matchups online and donate to their charities through Norton's fundraising site, CrowdRise.com.

"We had the idea to do a celebrity tournament some time ago when it became apparent that the game was a hit among celebrities," said Travis Boatman, senior vice president of mobile at Zynga Inc. "It seems like everyone from Katie Couric to Snoop Lion is into the game. It's really inspirational for the team to see how 'Words With Friends has become part of the cultural mainstream, and I think it has struck a chord because it's not just a game, it's a way for people to connect and keep in touch with each other."

In the first round, Norton said he'll face Boston Celtics captain Paul "The Truth" Pierce, who is playing for his foundation, The Truth Fund.

"I think it's going to be a tough first round for him," teased Norton. "I think it's great that he has a cause he supports, and I hope the amount he gets from just the first round is going to make him happy because I don't think it's going to go past there."

The brainy "Moonrise Kingdom" and "The Bourne Legacy" actor, who graduated from Yale University with a history degree, said his stiffest competition might come from Snoop Dogg, who has recently been going by the name Snoop Lion, because of the rapper's experience with wordplay.

And what about Baldwin? Why isn't the "30 Rock" actor, who was infamously booted from a flight last year for refusing to stop playing "Words With Friends" on his phone, among the contenders?

"Next year, for sure, if I have any say in it," said Norton. "I'm going to win this year, so adding him to the mix next year will make it interesting for me."

Libratone intros Zipp: the 'first and only' portable AirPlay speaker, expectedly wrapped in wool (video)

Libratone Zipp

If you've been following the surge of AirPlay speakers that started hitting the market in 2011, you've likely feasted your eyes on the spendy wool-clad systems by Libratone. While its larger Live and Lounge units have primarily been purposed for households, its new Zipp speaker is the being touted as the "first and only" portable AirPlay speaker. Make no mistake, unlike B&O Play's portable AirPlay-equipped Beolit 12 ($800), the Zipp's loaded with Libratone's proprietary PlayDirect protocol, meaning it doesn't require a separate wireless network / router for iDevices to connect to it over the air. The Zipp moniker is a play on the swappable wool grill which cozies around its vertically-standing tubular enclosures. Weighing four pounds and measuring in at 10.2 inches high by 4.8 inches in diameter, this "portable" unit is a good bit larger than the Blutooth-equipped Jawbone Big Jambox placed sideways, but it'll certainly fit in a backpack -- hey, it does have a leather carrying strap. Thankfully, that weight is partially due to its internal rechargeable battery, which should last up to eight hours.

As far as the speakers go, you'll find a duo of 1-inch ribbon tweeters facing the sides for the left and right channels, along with a 4-inch up-firing woofer. The rig also features Libratone's signature FullRoom design, which forces a 360-degree dispersion of the sound by way of deflectors in front of the tweeters. Beyond that, it'll naturally work with Libratone's existing iPhone app, allowing you to change the DSP on the fly for optimal output regardless of its placement in a room. The Zipp will hit Apple Stores later this October wrapped with a single red or grey zippered grill for $399, while other retailers will carry the $449 Classic Color and Funky Color editions, which each come with a trio of those wool grills (black, blue and red for the Classic, and black, pink and yellow for the Funky). Past that, a single grill by itself will cost you a relatively expensive $49 directly from Libratone. In the meantime, join us past the break for more details about the unit itself and PlayDirect, our initial impressions and a hands-on video overview.

Jupiter's Big Moon Ganymede Mapped by Amateur Astronomer

An amateur astronomer has created the first-ever homemade brightness map of Jupiter's huge moon Ganymede in a magnificent display of how non-professional skywatchers can contribute to the field of observational astronomy.

Greek skywatcher Emmanuel Kardasis of the Hellenic Amateur Astronomy Association created the new Ganymede map using a common "hobby" telescope and off-the-shelf camera and computer equipment. His map matches up well with images of Ganymede's surface taken by professionals, said officials with the European Planetary Science Congress (EPSC), which is meeting this week in Madrid.

For example, Kardasis' brightness (or albedo) map identifies such Ganymede features as Phrygia Sulcus, a system of grooves and ridges thousands of miles across, and a low-lying dark area called the Nicholson region.

To create the images, Kardasis attached a camera to his telescope and recorded a video of the ice-covered Ganymede, which is the largest moon in the solar system at 3,273 miles (5,268 kilometers) across.

He picked the video's sharpest frames, then enhanced them using photo-editing software, EPSC officials said.

"Ganymede has a tiny disk as seen from Earth so was a good test for my techniques," Kardisis said in a statement. "If the same methods were applied to other worlds, perhaps [Jupiter's] volcanic moon Io, we could capture surface fluctuations. Professional observatories may create better images, but they cannot monitor our rapidly and ever-changing universe."

The equipment amateurs need to generate products like his Ganymede map is relatively easy to find, Kardasis said.

"Creating useful images of planets requires a telescope with a diameter of at least eight inches. For tiny discs, such as the moons of Jupiter, bigger is definitely better," he said. "My Ganymede images were made using an 11-inch telescope. You also need a good motor drive on your tripod, a sensitive camera, some freely available software and lots of patience!"

Kardasis' work highlights the valuable contributions amateurs can make to astronomy, EPSC officials said. For example, amateurs could monitor surface and atmospheric changes on planets such as Neptune and moons like Saturn's massive satellite Titan, complementing the more detailed (but much less frequent) observations made by professionals.

"I hope my work will inspire anyone interested in astronomy to use whatever equipment they have to make useful observations," Kardasis said.

Kardasis' work will be presented at the EPSC meeting in Madrid on Thursday (Sept. 27).

Fish eaters run lower risk of heart attack, despite some mercury content, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Eat fish, but avoid fish with the most pollutants. This is the conclusion drawn by a group of researchers at Ume? University in Sweden after having weighed the risks of mercury content against the advantages of healthful fatty acids.

The work was done as part of an international collaborative effort.

Fish is healthful food, and several studies have shown that people who eat fish have a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases than those who eat very little or no fish. At the same time, some fish contain environmental pollutants that can be hazardous to our health. One such pollutant that is suspected of increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease is methyl mercury, which is found in varying degree in different kinds of fish. If people eat fish with much pollutants, this would lead to increased risk of disease, but at the same time if people are overly cautious and eat too little fish, the risk of disease also increases.

In order to attain a better understanding of what the golden mean might be, researchers at Ume? University, in collaboration with researchers from Finland and elsewhere, examined how the risk of heart attack (acute myocardial infarction) is contingent on the amount of omega-3 fats and mercury from fish that people have in their body. The content was measured in blood and hair samples from people that had previously participated in health studies in northern Sweden and eastern Finland. The Swedish blood samples were from the Medical Biobank in Ume?. Those who experienced a heart attack after the health check-up were compared with those who did not.

The findings are now being published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN). It turned out that mercury was linked to increased risk, and omega-3 fatty acids to decreased risk, of having a heart attack. The increased risk from mercury was noticeable only at high levels of this environmental pollutant in the body and if the level of the protective omega-3 fatty acids was concomitantly low. In other words, what is important is the balance between healthful and hazardous substances in fish. The environmental pollutant in this study was mercury. For organic pollutants like PCB and dioxin, the problem complex is similar, but no study of this kind has yet been undertaken.

The conclusion is simple: Eat fish, but avoid fish with the most pollutants. The Swedish National Food Agency recommends that people should eat fish 2-3 times a week, but their intake of predatory fish (e.g. pike, perch, pike-perch), which contain a great deal of mercury, should be limited (see link below). This study supports that recommendation. According to a recent study from the National Food Agency, 7 of 10 Swedes eat too little fish.

The extremes of technology customer service: how common sense and empathy create unmatched loyalty

The extremes of technology customer service how common sense and empathy create unmatched loyalty

Allow me to explain how two discussions started off in very similar ways, and ended... shall we say, differently. This is me, attempting to muster any sort of pleasantness in my voice at some ungodly hour of the morning on a Google Voice connection from Dubai back to the US:

"Hey! I'm having to cut a trip short due to an emergency back home. I actually purchased a trip protection plan when I checked out online -- would it be possible to provide a refund for this flight now that I need to cancel it?"

From here, I was told that this was too vague. That I would need medical proof of an injury or illness, and that if it were a pre-existing condition -- something like reoccurring cancer -- that simply wouldn't do. Oh, and if it's a home emergency, you'll need proof from your home insurance company that your abode is "uninhabitable."

"So... I'm basically hosed here? This trip protection plan doesn't really protect very much, does it?"

"... Do you want to file the claim?"

"No. That's okay. Thanks for your time."

It doesn't have to be this way.

iPhone 5 And Galaxy S3 - Business Insider

The story isn't iPhone or BlackBerry. Or iPhone and Android. Or iPhone and Windows Phone.

We're down to two devices now. Not two operating systems or platforms.

If you're looking for a top-of-the-line smartphone, it's either the iPhone 5 or Galaxy S III. That's it. Don't even try to pretend there's another viable option out there right now.

Samsung pulled off a damn good phone with the Galaxy S III this summer, one that even made me reconsider holding out for an iPhone 5. Samsung is the only other company that's building a smartphone ecosystem and brand that can challenge Apple's dominance.

After a few years of "Me Too!" phones following the original iPhone, it's pretty clear by now that Samsung's Galaxy S III has emerged as the only viable competitor. And the sales prove it. More than?20 million Galaxy S IIIs?are in users' hands now, which is insanely good for a single Android phone that's only been around since the beginning of June. Most premium Android phones don't sell that well over the course of a year. I bet that number goes way up thanks to Samsung's?aggressive ad campaign against the iPhone.

That's not to say there aren't other?good alternatives to the Galaxy S III and iPhone 5. HTC makes one called the One X that I really like. But beyond that, I haven't used any other phone that's good enough to mention in the same breath as the iPhone 5 or Galaxy S III. And I use a lot of phones.

And yet every other smartphone company tries to piggyback on the Apple/Samsung model, hosting big, splashy events that often fail to impress. I attend dozens of these every year, and only one or two or three actually stick out.

Take a look at Motorola's Droid Razr announcement from earlier this month. The whole presentation felt forced. Either Motorola's executives aren't media trained, or they simply didn't want to be on stage in front of an audience of tech journalists and analysts. You don't hear the same excitement in their voice that you hear at Apple events. It's unconvincing. And it all ended with Motorola's new CEO Dennis Woodside delivering the line, "Welcome to the new Motorola Mobility" that sounded (and looked) like he was embarrassed, not ushering in a new Google-led era for the company. I think three people clapped.

The wild card is still Nokia's upcoming Lumia 920 phone that runs Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 software. But I have a feeling that even though the phone is?absolutely gorgeous, it won't be a hit on the same level as the Galaxy S III or iPhone 5. Windows Phones have been embraced by critics, but they still haven't resonated with the public. When I saw the Lumia 920 a few weeks ago, there was nothing there that made me think it'll be different this time around.?But talking about Nokia and Microsoft right now is pointless. The Lumnia 920 won't launch until November at the earliest.

When Apple competitors promote their phones, they talk a lot about choice. Bigger screens. Faster chips. More memory. More whatever. But I think that's the opposite of what consumers want when trying to decide what to buy. Give them one amazing phone, the best phone. Not half a dozen confusing variations.

That's why I'm going to make it really simple for you. Today, if you want the best smartphone, you only have two choices: The Galaxy S III and the iPhone 5. Both have their advantages and disadvantages (I won't dig into that now), but I guarantee you'll be happy with either one. Ignore the rest of the noise.

I'm Scared of Resident Evil 6, But - Video Game Blog, Video Games ...

The argument between the gameplay of classic RE and modern RE that began upon RE4?s release in 2005 is almost as tiresome as the casual/hardcore gamer debate since the Wii released in 2006. However, now that the franchise has changed so drastically, its difficult not to at least acknowledge and mention the split between both gameplay styles.

This week, GamerSyndrome?s Greg Butcher reviewed the newest Resident Evil 6 demo, praising the game?s visuals, gore and gameplay. While I?ll agree that the presentation is great and highly detailed, Greg saw the demo in a much more positive light than I, as I?m far less enthused with the demo overall.

In recent years, Capcom has decided to demote the series from the king (and arguably, the birth of) of the horror genre to just another average third-person shooter.?Ironically, what scares me about Resident Evil 6 is that it won?t scare me at all.

Let?s rewind a little bit. As a lover or the original PlayStation trilogy, I will openly admit that playing RE4 was one of the best gaming experiences of my life. This was the game that brought in the big changes, but it still served its purpose in scaring the player. Traditional jump-scares were replaced?more tense and panic-inducing gameplay, and it certainly worked. My heart would pound as Leon reloaded his shotgun, as the relentless chainsaw maniac came running towards him to score an instant kill. As reluctant as I was initially to embrace such change, RE4 stands as one of my favourite in the series.

So while RE4 marked the beginning of the new era, its actually RE5 that disappointed me as a fan.?By no means a terrible game, but it seems the most far-removed entry in the franchise so far to me. RE4 brought the big changes in, sure, but it was still a survival-horror game. It still maintained that sense of loneliness, and really delivered on bringing death around every corner. In RE5, this had all disappeared in favour of the addition of co-op. There?s nothing to be afraid of when Sheva is constantly beside you to heal you, revive you or kill enemies for you. You don?t even get a chance to feel threatened. If you compare this game to the original, aside from the characters the only similarity is the use of healing herbs.

And now Resident Evil 6 is a mere two weeks away from release. There?s no way to know for certain how the game will be yet (unless you?re a lucky customer in Poland), but since we?ve been given two demos, five or more trailers and a hell of a load of screenshots, I think its fair to give some initial impressions.

In theory, the game is everything every type of fan could want: for the the traditional fans there?s zombies, Sherry Birkin, and a seemingly invincible stalking Nemesis-type boss; for newer fans, there?s Plagas-type enemies, Leon AND Chris, rolling around, taking cover and always-available melee attacks. But all of these ideas collide into something that doesn?t really know its own identity anymore.

My first issue is the plotline structure, which is split into three stories so that you alternate between three character pairs. What captivated me in the older games was the sense of claustrophobia, being secluded and surrounded, which doesn?t translate quite as well when you?re constantly moving across the globe. Still, Revelations followed this gameplay structure and that did manage to scare more than any other RE game in the last seven years.

Jumping into this new demo, instantly I was faced with the same problem in the previous demo. As I was lining up a headshot in my first zombie encounter, Helena was already blasting away the enemy herself. Not only is the game not scary, its seems so damn?easy. Leon may only be armed with a pistol, but its accompanied by bucketloads of ammo. Where in the first four games I?d have to strategically fire each round sparingly, hoping I?ll have enough to survive, here I can just spam the fire button and still never run out. And if I don?t fire away, my partner will just do it for me. Leon is supposed to represent the horror side of the campaign, but as he?s still free to run, jump and roll around, its the enemies that should be scared of him.

What really removes any sense of difficulty more than anything though is having a button for melee attacks on command. It removes the clever strategy that RE4 presented, because you had to carefully shoot a specific limb or body part in order to stun an enemy before punching or kicking. Not only did this require accurate shooting under tense circumstances but it also required good timing, as you had to run towards the enemy to attack. And if you didn?t get there quick enough, you?ve just put yourself right in the enemy?s clutches. Now that kind of tense and strategic element is gone as Chris swings his tree trunk arms around as he pleases.

Speaking of Chris, the sense of empowerment is even worse than Leon?s. The second demo opens with Chris literally inside a tank. He has three or more of his fellow soldiers to watch his back, and is armed ridiculously with all manner of machine guns and explosives. The enemies all have guns too and the cover system is vital, making it feel sadly like a Gears of War clone. The reward for killing an enemy used to be that you get to survive, but now it feels like killing is just a competition between you and your co-op partner to gain the most skill points.

I was disappointed that Jake?s gameplay was just more of the same from Chris? in the second demo, with the huge stalking boss?Ustanak ?nowhere to be seen this time around. I was excited when I found out we?d get another relentless Nemesis-like boss for this game. Then again, when the hulking mass was ran towards me in the first demo, I just felt safe in the knowledge that I could dive out the way. You can now sprint in this game too, so it rarely feels like the monster will catch up to you.

There?s no complaints in the visual and controls department. Both demos consistently felt solid and, dare I say, fun. It just doesn?t quite seem to be even close to the same game I fell in love with back in 2005. Should I expect another RE4? Perhaps not, as I?ve come to terms with the fact that there?ll almost never be a game to match such a masterpiece. Still, I wish Capcom would realise what it was that made that game so great ? the unique atmosphere and sense of loneliness.

They still have the ability to create that feel again too with hints of greatness showing in the demos, but they let their marketing strategies get in the way of that. They have said outright that there is simply no market for horror games anymore, but how can that be true? Amnesia and Penumbra are incredibly popular horror games and PC, and with Silent Hill games arguably on the decline in terms of quality, Capcom are given a huge space to fill in the console market.

Maybe Capcom really believe they?re creating a superior game with the addition of co-op, online play and ?improved? third-person shooter and cover mechanics. On paper, that is a superior game: build on the formula of a successful game and include new features. But these added features obstruct the game?s potential, rather than improve it. The old games had fixed camera angles, limited inventory, limited ammunition and revisits of previous areas, which have all been phased out in favour of modern conveniences in the current generation. But it?s these very things, these restrictions on the player, that make Resident Evil so fantastic and engrossing. The ability to sprint, roll, take cover with bucketloads of guns and ammo means that there?s nothing dangerous to fear in RE6. As Walter White once said, ?I am the danger?.

I hate being ?that guy? who?s negative and judging a game on simple demos, but I already know in my heart that including co-operative gameplay and single-player AI partner again will repeat RE5?s mistakes. I wouldn?t be so harsh on the series if I didn?t love this franchise, and if I didn?t know it was capable of being something so much better. I hope I?m wrong. I hope Capcom can pull it off and make me scared again, but I?d be very surprised.

Right now, the only thing I fear is being disappointed again. That said, I will eagerly?await my copy of Resident Evil 6 and see how it turns out, and I will control my expectations and be as optimistic as I can. If it has to be an over-the-top action game, then it can at least be a fun over-the-top action game. Hopefully the ammunition availability and partner dependence will be toned right down, while the difficulty and ferocity of enemies are boosted way up. If this really doesn?t turn out to be the game that I loved to be scared of when I was young, then I hope one day Capcom can recreate my childhood and realise that they had a great thing going.
