Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 2003 - Elitistreview

Earlier today I was so unhappy I thought I didn?t deserve wine ? that?s a pretty messed-up state for a wine writer to be in. The Editor insisted I not be so miserable and open something good for dinner. The Colombier Hermitage 1998 I popped was corked. Rather than view this as some existential judgment of myself, I popped something else. What a wine I opened!

2003 red Burgundy is weird old stuff; not all that often good, if we?re honest. When they are good they have personality in abundance. This certainly did, but it was merely an amplified, distilled personality of the village and vineyard. That counts as a real success. And if I deserve wine of such personality then my personality must be pretty winning ? hooray! Take that, insanity!

Pommard Premier Cru Clos des Epeneaux 2003, Comte Armand

Now that?s what mega-Pommard smells like! Ripe cherry fruit, with bright, fresh raspberries, a hint of leafiness and pure earthiness. And it?s powered up seriously in all those aspects, yeah! It?s not overly alcoholic or over-ripe, but just intense and focussed. Seriously serious and seriously fun on the nose; there?s just so much there! The palate has scale and intensity too, it?s a personality packed wine. The tannic structure is powerful with definite silkiness, fruit throbs in bucket-loads and there?s actually quite a lot of acidity too. It?s very Pommard in that the fruit is red tinged with green and there are robust tannins, and the Pommard it is is Clos des Epeneaux because the fruit hints at liqueur like characters and the tannins are both severe and polished enough. Being a 2003 this is not a wine to sit down and quaff. Then again, it is not heavy or overwhelming either, rather it is involving. It asks questions of you as you drink it, it engages your faculties, it wants to get as much out of you as you get out of it. There?s concentration, length, balance, tannin, all that stuff, but the defining character of this wine is that it is a really brilliant Clos des Epeneaux ? an example of the very highest order I?d say. It?ll age forever ? pow, zap, wow, drink it now!

I had another four bottles of this which I had to sell at the start of the year. Whoever got those is in for some extraordinary pleasure when they pop them ? so good it might make them pop their clogs!

Dear Dr. P | The Brackety-Ack

?Dr. P, Is masturbation ever harmful??

Last column discounted the myths of harm from autoeroticism and listed damage done by anti-masturbatory thinking. Today, we turn to what science says about the likely benefits of autoeroticism. We do not address the religious-moral perspectives on the topic, which vary from very negative to permissive. So, as Elizabeth Barrett Browning almost said, ?How do I love me? Let me count the ways.? Long-term health benefits: To avoid any type of (solo) erotosexual activity until marriage is akin to an athlete going about in a wheel chair to save his legs for the ?big race.? Disuse of any organ system leads to pathology and atrophy. The British Journal of Urology in July, 2003 published a study of 2,338 Australian men, of whom 1,079 had prostate cancer. ?What we found was men who ejaculated most (more than five times a week) in their 20s, 30s and 40s had about a third less prostate cancer risk than men in the lowest category of ejaculation.? The benefit was only from autoerotic ejaculation. The men who had sex with many women did not have a lower risk for prostate cancer. Enhancement of coupled relationships: Woody Allen in his film Love and War is asked by the Countess after lovemaking, ?Boris! How did you get to be such a great lover?? He responds, ?Well, I practice a lot when I?m alone.? Autoeroticism is beneficial in that you can learn how you responds to your own touch, pressure and rhythm so that you later can teach your partner what pleases you.? When a partner is told or shown what pleases the other, the love-bonding is enhanced by the self-disclosing communication and increased pleasure and intimacy. Sex Therapy for common sexual dysfunctions: Women often are unfulfilled by their partner?s too quick response. The average coitus lasts six to seven minutes. For the 66% of young American females who complain that they rarely, if ever, attain orgasm from coitus, there is a common factor: a history of scant or absent masturbation. The quick-trigger males share a history of guilt-laden and hurried masturbation. Ironically, the current therapy for premature ejaculation in males and for preorgasmic females is training in autoeroticism. Persons become responsible for their own sexual response and orgasm in partnered sex by learning effective stimulation, response and control in autoeroticism. Preservation of monogamous bonds: If a partner is ill or indisposed, autoeroticism relaxes and keeps the other from straying. While separated or travelling, autoeroticism, sometimes conducted simultaneously over the phone or web, can keep the sexual expression mutual and monogamous. Keeping teen libidos safely expressed: Autoeroticism is an alternative for more risky coitus in teen relationships. ?Outercourse? is advised to youth, whose hormonal sex drives are tidal, in place of intercourse. With auto- and mutual eroticism, there is no risk of disease or pregnancy, yet they can share a degree of physical release and intimacy. Relief of menstrual pain and discomfort: Helen Hyde and John DeLamater (2000) state in their text that an orgasm from autoeroticism (or coitus) was effective in providing relief from the discomfort of menstrual cramps. Additionally, the uterine spasms produced by orgasms briefly increased the rate of flow but overall shortened the total duration of the period. Relief of pain in labor and delivery: An odd application of autoeroticism is in the relief of discomfort and augmentation of labor in childbirth. Although many midwives know this, and web sites exist advocating this procedure, it is not well known that birthing need not result in pain but rather can be erotic and orgasmic. Mainline American medicine is not yet ready to investigate the applicability of autoeroticism or sexual stimulation to obstetrics. As a relaxant and soporific: As an insomnia cure or soporific, an orgasm through autoeroticism does the job. The ?rolling over and going to sleep? phenomenon can be useful when you actually want to go to sleep and can?t. Autoeroticism is cheaper, healthier, and safer than barbiturates or sleeping pills, with no side effects or addictive dangers. What is too much autoeroticism? Masturbation cannot become addictive, since it is a normal physiological function. One simply gets sore or tired. What is too much? It is when someone misses class, work, or other appointments, or if they fail to interact with people or significant others because of a preference for autoeroticism. In these cases, it is not the sexual activity that is impaired or impairing. There you are. You now have the evidence to make an informed decision and take matters into your own hands. So, soft music, wine, a nice handle-light dinner forone, and whatever . . .

Solitarily yours,

Dr. P

Pope to join celebs, presidents with Twitter feed

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? He already has a billion followers.

Now, Pope Benedict XVI will join the Twitter-sphere, tweeting from a personal account along with the world's celebrities, leaders and ordinary folk.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi made the announcement Thursday, saying details about Benedict's handle and other information will come when the Vatican officially launches the account, perhaps before the end of the year.

The 85-year-old Benedict sent his first tweet from a Vatican account last year when he launched the Vatican's news information portal, aimed at the world's 1.1 billion Catholics. The new Twitter account will be his own, though it's doubtful Benedict himself will wrestle down his encyclicals, apostolic exhortations and other papal pronouncements into 140-character bites.

Benedict, who writes longhand and doesn't normally use a computer, will more likely sign off on tweets written in his name.

Expanded Gambling Opens Up New Possibilities For Baltimore's ...

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ? Maryland voters have spoken! There will be expanded gambling in Maryland?including a new casino in Baltimore.

Now Caesars Entertainment is talking about its plans. Derek Valcourt explains?a change is in the works.

The backers of Baltimore?s casino originally planned for an all-slots Harrah?s Casino, but not anymore. Now they are changing the name. Soon, a Horseshoe Casino will ride into town.

Horseshoe brand casinos are focused around table games and now that voters have approved Question 7, the operators of Baltimore?s first casino plan to take full advantage.

?This changes the project significantly,? said John Payne, Caesars Entertainment.

The owners of Caesars Casino in Las Vegas will also own Baltimore?s Horseshoe Casino, and promise legendary service along with style and elegance. They showed WJZ interior photos of other Horseshoe Casinos for a glimpse of what?s to come. The casino promises to keep some video slot machines, but now they?ll add as many as 80-110 table games.

?The extra restaurants that we?re going to now add? The increased facility capacity that we?ll have in our multipurpose area? We?re going to? build a World Series of Poker room, which started under the Horseshoe name. And all of that together, we believe, is a perfect fit for our location,? Payne said.

While the square footage and the exterior of the building won?t change, they are now scrambling to redesign the layout of their floorspace, and planning to spend roughly an extra $25-million on the project.

And the backers of Baltimore?s casino say because table games were approved, they now need to hire an additional 500 full-time employees. Most of those jobs will be table game dealers and supervisors.

Groundbreaking for the new casino is set for sometime in the first half of 2013, with the planned opening sometime in mid 2014.

ABC's Diane Sawyer spurs jokes from Twitterverse

NEW YORK (AP) ? Diane Sawyer's Election Night performance left some viewers asking if she had begun celebrating Tuesday's election a bit early.

Co-anchoring ABC News' coverage, the veteran journalist struck a different manner from her practiced, straight-news-delivering style.

Sawyer spoke more slowly than usual while seeming to prop herself on outstretched arms at the anchor desk she shared with George Stephanopoulos.

"OK," she said at one point around 10 p.m. EST, "I wanna ? can we have our music, because this is another big one here? Minnesota, we're ready to project Minnesota, rrright now. ... Well, tonight we know that President Barack has won Minnesota," she rambled on, stumbling over the president's name.

Maybe Sawyer was just weary from the recent torrent of news.

In any case, the Twitterverse took quick notice and began cracking wise.

Her name was soon trending with unflattering posts, while a new Twitter handle, Drunk Diane Sawyer, collected hundreds of followers. An ABC spokesman did not comment.

"A bit tipsy," ''hammered" or "on pain killers, muscle relaxers, benzos or some combination" were among the jeering explanations. Another likened it to an episode of HBO's drama "The Newsroom," where Will McAvoy, the fictitious anchorman, had eaten a couple of pot brownies before unexpectedly being summoned to his anchor desk to report a news story.

Some tweeters joked that a more fun-loving Sawyer was a ploy by ABC to boost viewership. Several Twitter followers said they were drawn to the network by word that Sawyer was behaving, by one description, "a bit wacky."

"Bad night for Romney," one tweeter summed up. "Worse night for Diane Sawyer?"

SAN FRANCISCO (November 7, 2012) At the annual meetings of the American College of Dentists (ACD) and the International College of Dentists (ICD), 14 U.S. Army dentists were inducted as new Fellows of these honorary dental organizations, in recognition of their professional achievement and service to the dental profession.

"I congratulate my colleagues in the Army Dental Corps for this honor, which they earned through their remarkable work ethic and spirit of service, to advance dental readiness and wellness initiatives for Soldiers and advocate tenaciously for the oral health of their families and communities," said Col. Arthur Scott, DMD, General Dentistry Consultant to the U.S. Army Surgeon General. "Their personal dedication to duty and the Nation reflects admirably on Army Dentistry, the Army Medical Department, the U.S. Army, and the profession of dentistry."

Only about 3.5 percent of dentists are Fellows of the ACD. Fellowship is granted to those who "have exemplified excellence through their outstanding leadership and exceptional contributions to dentistry and society," according to the ACD. The following individuals were recognized as new ACD Fellows on October 18:

SAN FRANCISCO (November 7, 2012) At the annual meetings of the American College of Dentists (ACD) and the International College of Dentists (ICD), 14 U.S. Army dentists were inducted as new Fellows of these honorary dental organizations, in recognition of their professional achievement and service to the dental profession.
