Netflix clues viewers in on Christmas Eve service outage

Still wondering what the heck happened with Netflix on Christmas Eve? Cloud architect Adrian Cockroft has returned to fill in the details with an official blog post. As we already knew, Amazon Web Services was to blame for the issue -- the company issued an apology earlier today -- with the Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) service causing the outage. The interruption began at 3:30PM ET on December 24th, though some users had normal service until later that evening, at which point many TV-connected devices in the US, Canada and Latin America were affected. Notably, customers in the UK, Ireland and Nordic countries did not experience issues.

Netflix uses hundreds of ELBs, but only "a handful" failed -- devices using these specific ELBs, including game consoles, were unable to access the server. While the Elastic Load Balancers serving Mac and PC streaming were unaffected, those users experienced latency issues, and may have needed to reload a stream. Cockroft explains that at 1:30AM ET on Christmas Day, the ELBs were restored by AWS, and most users were reportedly up and running at that point, though some still experienced downtime throughout the morning. Ultimately, Netflix plans to improve redundancy, which will be costly and could take some time to accomplish. For now, let's hope that AWS manages to avoid future failures. You'll find Netflix's full explanation at the source link below.

5 Tips to Blow Up Your Old Expectations & Move Forward | World of ...

5 Tips to Blow Up Your Old Expectations & Move ForwardA client shared his frustration over not achieving more in his life, all those things he thought he would have done by now. I suggested that his struggle with low self-esteem would be helped if he stopped comparing himself to others.

This man, like many I know, deals heroically every day with the special needs challenges in his family. He and his wife step up in a non-traditional, focused, determined manner with love and spirit that is hard for outsiders to imagine. He is the frog in the pot, so it is nearly impossible for him to see how exceptional he is.

His reaction to me was: ?Are you asking me to lower my expectations??

No, I said, I?m asking you to blow them up, destroy them, obliterate them to dust. I hate that term: ?lower expectations?, (can you tell?) as if by thinking differently we are less ourselves instead of more.

Here are some tips:

1. Start with a clean slate. Be honest with yourself. Are the expectations you are holding onto really your own? Or are they some one else?s? If they are someone else?s ditch them.

2. Brain storm. Write a stream of consciousness, without censor, without judgement. You can cull out the absurd (I expect to be America?s Next Top Model!) later.

3. Embrace where you are in life, because where ever you are, even if it?s really hard, it is Good.

4. Create goals, expectations, standards, whatever you want to call them, that work with you instead of against you. I may not ever be America?s Next Top Model, but I maybe I could walk more.

5. Keep the expectations fluid. Your needs in life will change for good and all. Keep light on your feet.

At the end of Working Girl, (an ?80?s iconic movie that you have got to see just for the hair!), a titan of industry tells a story to his board of directors that goes something like this:

One day in the Lincoln Tunnel, traffic came to a stop. A huge 18-wheel truck exceeded the clearance of the tunnel and got stuck. It couldn?t move forward or backward. The emergency crew were at a loss, scratching their heads as tempers began to fray all around them. Finally a little boy from a car waiting patiently behind the rig piped up: ?Why don?t you just let air out of the tires?? Which, of course, they promptly did, lowering the truck which allowed it to move forward.

Life generally requires at least a few of those deflating-the-tires moments. My life is actually full of them and they haven?t been easy to deal with here?s why.

Even though I know I have to deflate my tires I resist it. My heart tells me I am not living up to potential yet again! So many times I asked myself if it was time to lower my expectations. In a small but very significant way it was having a chronic illness that first taught me that the old expectations of myself were keeping me frustrated and depressed. As long as I held on to the notion that I had to have the same production levels as I did when I was healthy I was letting myself and in my eyes, everyone around me, down. It finally occurred to me that since my illness was not going away I had to face some choices.

Either I keep banging my head against the Old Expectations Wall or I blow the damn thing up and build a brand new wall, or a dig a tunnel under it or an airplane to fly over it!

Picture this: Raiders of the Lost Ark. Harrison Ford plays Indiana Jones (?it?s not the years, it?s the mileage?) who has battled and out-raced countless henchmen bent on his destruction. He lands in a market square and out of nowhere comes a seven foot tall giant brandishing the mother of all swords! Indy sighs, takes out his gun and shoots him.

Wow! Legend has it that Harrison Ford improvised this scene because he really was sick and too tired to do the choreographed sword fight. His flash of creativity became one of the most popular and iconic scenes in filmdom.

During my twenties when I was first confronted by a sickness that wasn?t going away I had a therapist who helped me break through my old expectations. It took over six years for me to get my B.A but I managed it. Then when I was thirty, I bit the bullet and went to graduate school thinking I would be the old lady in the class. Guess what? There were many like me, some a even older, who had postponed their post-grad education for whatever reasons.

Later, I struggled with the reality accepting a life without kids. I married late and I was sick a lot, but by some miracle they arrived. It wasn?t easy, but now I have kids the same age as my great nieces and nephews. It?s a hoot!

My career expectation was to climb the corporate ladder to a satisfying administrative position. After hitting the glass ceiling I quit and struck out on my own. That was over fifteen years ago. The road to fulfilling my dream of a private practice for the 21st century has been rocky but every time I hit a rut, I remember I can change course and still move forward.

Hanging on to expectations that work against us is like trying to pull our fingers out of a Chinese finger trap. The more you yank and pull the tighter the damn thing traps your fingers. The trick is to keep calm, relax and let your clever brain find another way. Then your fingers slip out easily!

Italy centre left pushes Monti to pick a side

ROME (Reuters) - Italian centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani called on Mario Monti on Sunday to pick which side he was on politically after the outgoing prime minister unveiled plans this week to lead a broad centrist alliance in February elections.

Monti said on Friday he wanted his alliance to go beyond traditional political boundaries and unite a coalition of factions and civil society groups around a reform agenda aimed at tackling Italy's economic woes.

His announcement ended weeks of speculation over whether he would run for a second term and pits him against Bersani's centre-left Democratic Party (PD) and Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PDL) group.

But Bersani urged the former European Commissioner on Sunday to be clearer about whether he supports a left or right-leaning agenda and outline the choices he would make on issues such as civil rights.

"This centrist alliance needs to explain exactly where they stand," Bersani told reporters on Sunday.

"Does Monti and the centre not think that the bipolar political system is working? Do they want to dismantle it? If not, then which side are they on?"

He repeated that the centre left would be open to discussing a possible alliance with Monti once his position was clearer.

Bersani's demands come after Berlusconi attacked Monti on Saturday, accusing him of striking a hidden deal with the left to help them secure power after the February 24-25 elections.

Pier Ferdinando Casini, head of Italy's oldest and largest centrist party, the UDC, which is backing Monti, has denied that any secret accord has been struck and quickly rebuffed Bersani's demands.

"The PD does not want a competitive and uncomfortable centrist grouping because they prefer the old and eternal fight with Berlusconi," he said.

Monti was appointed to head a technocrat government last year to save Italy from financial crisis after Berlusconi stepped down as prime minister.

While Monti has won the backing of investors, the business community and the Catholic Church, many Italians have become increasingly tired of the tax hikes and spending cuts he has imposed to shore up battered public finances.

Opinion polls suggest the PD will win a comfortable lower house majority but may have to agree a deal with centrist forces in the Senate, where the centre left has struggled to gain control in past elections.

The PD, which has pledged to maintain Monti's broad reform course while putting more emphasis on growth and jobs, has been politely sceptical about his candidacy, while Berlusconi has launched an angry media blitz against the 69-year-old economics professor.

Monti, whose status as senator for life means he does not have to stand for a seat, said on Friday his grouping could win a "significant result" in the election, but there have also been fears it could lead to a less stable parliament.

A survey published on Sunday in newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore found that about 36 percent of Italians would choose Bersani to be the next prime minister, compared with around 23 percent for Monti and about 22 percent for Berlusconi.

Hopes for Syria breakthrough faint as U.N. envoy visits Russia

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The international mediator seeking to end the 21-month-old conflict in Syria met Russia's foreign minister in Moscow on Saturday after talks in Damascus but expectations of progress toward a negotiated solution were low.

U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi's talks with Sergei Lavrov occurred a day after the main Syrian opposition group rebuffed diplomatic advances by Russia and firmly reiterated it would not negotiate with President Bashar al-Assad's government.

Brahimi is trying to build on an agreement reached in Geneva in June by world powers, including the United States and Russia, that called for the creation of a transitional government but left Assad's role unclear.

The mediator, who met Assad and others on a five-day trip to Syria, is to meet together with senior U.S. and Russian diplomats in the coming weeks, after two such meetings this month that produced no signs of a breakthrough.

In Damascus on Thursday, Brahimi called for a transitional government to rule until elections in Syria and said only substantial change would meet demands of ordinary Syrians, but did not specify who could be part of the transitional body.

Russia has vocally supported Brahimi's efforts while refusing to join Western and Arab calls for Assad's exit, as it has throughout a conflict that has killed 44,000 people since protests in March 2011 elicited a fierce government crackdown.

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Makdad discussed Brahimi's proposals with Lavrov in Moscow on Thursday.

Lavrov on Friday urged the government and opposition to start a dialogue, and Russia said it had invited the leader of the National Coalition opposition group to meet Russian officials in Moscow or elsewhere for the first time.

The invitation and calls for dialogue were among signs that with the rebels advancing steadily over the second half of 2012, Russia may be reaching harder for a diplomatic solution than it did when it was more confident Assad could hold out.

But coalition leader Moaz Alkhatib said he had ruled out a trip to Moscow and suggested he would only meet Russian officials if Moscow condemned the Syrian government's actions and clearly called for Assad to step down.

An opposition spokesman said separately on Friday the coalition "will not negotiate with the Assad regime", also underscoring the uphill struggle Brahimi faces.

Russia, together with China, has angered the West and some Arab states by vetoing three U.N. Security Council resolutions meant to put pressure on Assad, who has given Moscow one of its firmest post-Soviet footholds in the Middle East.

President Vladimir Putin has said Russia is not trying to prop up Assad, contending that its vetoes and opposition to U.N. sanctions are driven by the principle of non-interference in sovereign states.

Russia has warned it will not allow a repeat in Syria of last year's events in Libya, where NATO intervention, authorized by the U.N. Security Council after Russia abstained from a vote, helped rebels topple Muammar Gaddafi.

Churning out eZine Content | Online success with SWELEX's ...

Creating your own content can be a challenge if you publish your own online newsletter or eZine.

However, regardless of any topic you are publishing on, types of contents can be generally divided into four categories, namely factual content, short tips, mini stories and case studies.

Other than writing your own content, you can get your own unique content the quick and easy way by organizing an interview with an expert or leader in the topic.

Very often, this can be done for free and since the interviewee is writing out most of the content, there is nothing else for you to do other than giving the interviewee something valuable in exchange (maybe a meal!).

Now if you have money to spare, you can hire a ghostwriter to write your content for you without taking any credit. Recommended professional marketplaces where you can seek ghostwriters include http://www.elance.com/ and http://www.rentacoder.com/.

Another little known and underused method in getting your own content is via public domains. If you are not familiar with the term ?public domain?, ?public domain? simply means anything that is NOT protected under US copyright law.

This includes ALL works published before 1923 and, under certain conditions, works published up to 1978. And in this case, we are referring ?works? to written materials such as reports, articles and books.

Republishing and repackaging public domain information can help you save time and effort from creating new ideas and content as they are readily available. On top of that, you do not have to pay royalties or copyright fees on that work.

If you fancy the idea of publishing content without any writing on your part, this method is for you.

Dr. Oz descends further into psychic quackery ? Respectful Insolence

Regular readers have probably noticed that I?m taking it easy this week, at least compared to my usual ridiculous level of output. It is, after all, the holidays, and last night I even went to see my cousin?s son play basketball and then hung out at the local Knights of Columbus hall. (No, it didn?t spontaneously explode upon my entering it.) I?ll get back to regular blogging after the 1st of the year. Between now and then I?ll be uncharacteristically mellow and brief, because even a clear Plexiglass box of blinking lights needs a break now and then to recharge the ol? Tarial cells. Not that it?s actually much of a rest, but a redistribution of effort to grant writing, from which blog posts are a brief respite.

None of this stops me, however, from being annoyed by certain things even now. For example, I was sitting there, as so often happens, an ad for Dr. Oz?s TV show popped up. It?s been a while since I?ve paid much attention to Dr. Oz, who basically jumped the shark when he declared ?ber-quack Dr. Joe Mercola a ?pioneer? in alternative medicine when from my view the only thing Mercola is a ?pioneer? in is using the Internet to make money off of credulous marks with more money and distrust of science than sense and then let the shark eat whatever scientist was left in him when he decided that faith healing actually works and that John Edward could really talk to the dead.

Apparently Dr. Oz, not satisfied with having become the biggest and richest supporter of quackery in existence, his fame given a jump start by Oprah?s woo-infused empire and then sustained by his apparent decision to ?integrate? pure quackery, pseudoscience, and mysticism with his vanishing focus on real medicine, has decided to embrace nonsense ever the more tightly, the better to provide more bread and circuses to his addled viewers. I suppose I shouldn?t be surprised, but this surprised even me, and in a way I was happy that I missed this when it aired the first time around. I?m referring to the episode set to air today in which Dr. Oz features the ?Long Island medium Theresa Caputo. As if this weren?t bad enough, Dr. Oz promotes her as somehow being able to help his viewers deal with anxiety by communicating with dead relatives on ?the other side.? Yes, in this case, Dr. Oz goes beyond dipping his toe in the water of pure nonsense to diving right in and swimming to the bottom of the cesspit of psychic scams.

Caputo describes herself thusly:

I began seeing spirit at age 4. I suffered from anxiety for years until my mom suggested I go to a spiritual healer/teacher. I went to see Pat Longo and that?s how I found out that I had the ability to communicate with spirit. I have been a practicing medium for over 10 years and a certified medium with the Forever-Family Foundation ? an organization dedicated to connecting science with the afterlife. People ask me to describe the process of receiving information. It?s hard for me to describe because I see, hear and feel things differently than we do in the physical world. My wish for every person I come in contact with, is that they receive a message that will give them healing and closure to embrace life without their loved ones.

Yes, Caputo appears to follow in the footsteps of a long line of ?psychic? scammers and mediums like John Edward and, of course, the ever-vile (or at least viler than most self-proclaimed psychics) Sylvia Browne. None of this stops Dr. Oz from entitling his segment, Can talking to the dead help end your anxiety? I could have made this the world?s shortest episode of The Dr. Oz Show by answering this simply, No.

Not Dr. Oz, who states multiple times in this segment that ?medicine doesn?t have all the answers? or ?doctors don?t have all the answers.? This is, of course, true. Doctors don?t always have all the answers, just as science doesn?t know everything. But as Dara O?Briain puts it, ?Just because science doesn?t know everything doesn?t mean you can fill in the gaps with whatever fairy tale most appeals to you.? Yet that?s exactly what Dr. Oz is doing here: Inserting a belief that a cheesy Long Island woman with bleach blond helmet hair and a fake tan can talk to the dead for science and reason.

As has become the formula for Oz shows that feature psychics and various claimants to paranormal powers, Dr. Oz starts off with a purely credulous segment introducing her, chats with her a bit. This time around, he doesn?t seem to express even the perfunctory claim of ?skepticism? that he normally does (and did, for instance, with John Edward). He simply declares her ?amazing? and wonders if she can help cure anxiety with her claimed ability to speak with a person?s dead relatives.

Next comes the testimonial. we?re introduced to a woman named Deanna who discusses having crippling anxiety, which she attributed to not knowing what?s on the other side. Declaring herself a ?skeptic? going in (don?t they all?), she tells her story, which is lame even by the usual lame standards of psychic tricks. Basically, she says that before her session with Theresa, she prayed to her dead uncle Tony, asking him to tell Theresa the name of a movie, so that she would believe in life after death. The name of the movie? Goodfellas. Amazingly, Theresa apparently managed to name the movie. Anyone want to bet that she did it after the usual psychic cold reading routine? In response, Dr. Oz repeated his mantra that ?we don?t have all the answers in medicine,? adding, ?and so, if there are other options that might be effective?and I don?t have to understand why they work as a doctor?but if there are things that could be helpful to you and particularly to get through a huge problem like anxiety, I think we should stretch our minds out.?

Apparently Dr. Oz has stretched his mind out to the point where its rationality has snapped. Either that, or he knows this is all nonsense and is pandering to his audience. Take your pick. I don?t know which is worse for a doctor: To be completely credulous or to be in on the con.

Next up, of course, are psychic readings, courtesy of Caputo. (You knew this was coming, didn?t you?) It?s the usual cold reading drivel that we?ve seen time and time again from psychics innumerable. Caputo asks a woman whose sister died if it was something to do with the ?heart, lungs, or breast.? All of these are likely to be the top three causes of death in a woman who is relatively young and didn?t die a traumatic death (which Caputo appeared to know in advance). Almost anything that causes death is likely to impact the heart and lungs before the end, and if the woman happened to have died of cancer then breast cancer is the most likely culprit. It turns out that the woman?s sister died of a severe asthma attack that apparently collapsed one or both lungs. Caputo then asks the woman whether her sister took her asthma medication, giving the reason that her sister told her that her passing might have been prevented because ?we knew better.? Caputo then tells her that her sister said that her passing was ?instant? and that she didn?t suffer, which sounds to me like complete nonsense. Caputo has obviously never seen someone die of respiratory failure due to asthma. It is almost never instant, and it frequently involves a long period of intense air hunger and shortness of breath. It is not pleasant.

Of course, what psychics are about is giving the living what they want, and that?s exactly what Caputo does. She tells the woman that her sister wants her to let go of her guilt over her sister?s death. That?s why she told the woman that her sister didn?t suffer when she died. That?s why she provides messages of love from beyond and assurance that there really, really is an afterlife. Consider this. When have you ever seen or heard a psychic tell someone like this woman that her dead relative is in hell, hates her, or blames her for her death? I?ve never heard that, although obviously just because I haven?t heard it doesn?t mean it doesn?t occasionally happen. If it does, though, it must be rare. That?s not what people want to hear from psychics. No! They want to hear that there is a happy, gauzy afterlife where their loved ones now reside, and that all conflicts, guilt, and anger that might have existed in life are now gone. They want to hear that the dead have forgiven them, and that?s what Caputo delivers, just like every other psychic medium scammer out there. She even goes on to tell this woman that her dead father, who apparently died several months before her sister did, knows that she was there with him when he died and that she held his hand as he passed away.

And Dr. Oz falls for it once again, jumping in to ask the woman if this experience was helping her or hurting her. Meanwhile, the second testimonial is a woman who was terrified to go to see a doctor because she was afraid of learning she had heart disease and whose father refused to see a doctor and ended up dying suddenly of heart disease. It?s more of the same, with Caputo empathizing and cold reading and assuring the woman that her father is ?fine? and that her father is assuring her that she?s okay and will be okay if she takes care of herself. Later, during audience questions, Caputo reassures another woman that her father knew she was holding him as he took his last breath.

It?s sad, really. Whenever I think Dr. Oz can?t go any lower, he inevitably proves me wrong. The only thing that Dr. Oz is likely to have achieved here is to publicize yet another psychic scam (which is what Caputo is), such that Caputo will likely be able to increase her charges beyond the already exorbitant $400 for a half hour session that she already charges. I don?t think that it can be repeated too often: Either Dr. Oz is completely credulous and believes this stuff, or he knows it?s a scam and is cynically promoting it anyway, pandering to the lowest common denominator of his audience. I can?t think of a third option right now.

Couple loses adoptive daughter after Russia signs ban

After a roller coaster week, Kendra Skaggs sat down to vent on her blog. She had used that space to document her 13 month journey of adopting a young girl named Polina from Russia. But now, with that dream just weeks away from fulfillment, she described her frustration, fear and anger as she watched it being snatched away.

"I have no control. I'm on the other side of the world and I can't hold and comfort my daughter as I wait to hear if we will forever be separated," she wrote in a passionate entry

Her writing seemed to speak for hundreds of American parents whose hopes of adopting a Russian orphan were dashed today when Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law a controversial ban on adoptions to the United States. The move is part of Russia's retaliation for a set of human rights sanctions passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by President Obama earlier this month. Critics, including the U.S. State Department, say the adoption ban is playing politics with the lives of children.

Russia is the third most popular country for Americans to adopt from, but in recent years the issue has become a political football in Russia. Americans have adopted over 60,000 Russian children since the fall of the Soviet Union, but Russian officials have seized on the cases of 19 children who died after being adopted by Americans.

In 2010, a 7-year-old adopted boy named Artyom was put on a plane back to Russia alone by his adoptive mother from Tennessee with little more than a note saying she did not want him anymore. The case touched off a wave of fury in Russia and adoptions to the United States were nearly halted.

The Many Adventures of Vladimir Putin

Just a week ago Kendra and her husband visited Polina at her orphanage outside Moscow. The bubbly 5-year-old suffers from spina bifida, a condition that has left her numb from the waist down and unable to walk. They showed Polina photos of her new bedroom and told her about her new family. They played together, hugged each other, and promised to see each other soon when they returned in January to bring her home to Arkansas.

The adoption ban legislation, meanwhile, had just been introduced by Russian lawmakers. Kendra had hoped their case, which was nearly completed, would sneak in under the wire. She held out hope again after a Moscow court approved her adoption on Monday. All that was needed was a 30 day waiting period before they could bring Polina home.

It appears even that was too late. The law goes into effect on Jan. 1, but Russian officials have said even cases of 52 children who are within weeks of traveling to the United States are now frozen. Authorities have pledged to find new homes for them in Russia.

For the Skaggs family, it is agonizing to be so close to bringing her home, yet so far. Kendra fears Polina will think she was abandoned again.

"It's the fear of what she is going to think, that we forgot her," she said in an interview with ABC News.

"She's out there and I can't take care of her," she said, crying softly. "I can't help her. I can't tell her I love her. So it's really hard."

She also worries what will happen to Polina in Russia, a country with scarce accommodations for the handicapped.

"Russia really isn't set up for people with disabilities. You can't get into the metro even to get around because it's just levels and levels of stairs that you have to go up and down and there's no handicapped access to the buildings," Kendra said.

Putin's Adoption Ban Breaks Kendra Skaggs' Heart

Hundreds of thousands of children languish in what are often described as Russia's under-resourced orphanages. Many of them, like Polina, have special needs, which is one of the reasons they may have been given up at birth. Often those children face an uncertain future once they leave the orphanage system when they turn 18.

Kendra described Polina as a fiercely independent, intelligent, and determined young girl.

"She's very loving, very kind. She loves to sing and dance to music and listen to the music," she said.

In a home video that Kendra and her husband took with their cell phones, a beaming Polina proudly counts to 10 in English. In another she waves hello to her new grandparents. An overjoyed look envelops her face as she realizes that she will soon have grandparents. In another she tells Kendra she loves her.

With no way of contacting Polina, Kendra said she wishes she could send her a simple message.

"I would tell her we love her and to be strong and that were going to do everything we can to come back and get her. Everything that's in our power. We want to bring her home with us and have her to be our daughter," she said.

"I'd give anything to go see her and just wrap her in my arms and tell her I love her and to bring her home," she said.

At the end of their last visit, Kendra, mindful of the pending legislation, broke down in tears as she said goodbye. This time it was Polina who comforted her.

"Don't cry mommy, be strong,'" she said.

How to Real Estate Investors acquire thousands of properties ...

Syndication may let you get a lot of units, numerically. But when you bring in other people and their money, you're giving up returns. That said, the management fees from a syndicate are sometimes the ONLY money being made. Ask me about a mini-storage I'm stuck in!

What's the biggest key? Spend less than you make. Whether you're making $10 an hour or have a $200K a year job, you have to spend less than you make. Save the difference and invest it. Buy good investments (tough to do 100% of the time) and roll the returns back into your portfolio. Over time, it will begin to snowball.

SPOILER ALERT: Twist awaits US fans of 'Downton'

(AP) ? British fans of "Downton Abbey" are feeling blue after Tuesday's conclusion of Season 3, even as the U.S. audience eagerly anticipates this third cycle on PBS' "Masterpiece" beginning Jan. 6.

(ANY "ABBEY" DEVOTEES WHO PREFER NOT TO LEARN WHAT AWAITS THEM ARE URGED TO STOP READING RIGHT NOW.)

___

One of the stars of this wildly popular British costume drama is leaving the series after its third season. Dan Stevens had opted not to continue beyond his initial commitment, the British network ITV confirmed Wednesday.

His character, Matthew Crawley, has been written out with what ITV called an "untimely and tragic death" in the season finale. That episode will air in the U.S. in February.

Michelle Dockery will be returning in Season 4 as Matthew's soon-to-be widow, Lady Mary.

Good Reads: gun laws, lottery winners, online education, and tech gets sensory

A round-up of this week's long-form good reads include Britain's gun laws, the burden of lottery winners, online courses vs. the college experience, and sensory developments in high-tech.

By Gregory M. Lamb,?Staff writer / December 22, 2012

Arizona Lottery officials stand next to an enlargement of the winning $587.5 Million Powerball ticket last week during a news conference in Scottsdale, Ariz. Phoenix resident Matthew Good claimed the second half of last month's record $587 million Powerball jackpot, pocketing $192 million after taxes.

The Sandy Hook school shooting in Connecticut brought a deluge of media attention to gun control. One useful perspective came from the Lexington?s Notebook column in The Economist magazine. Britain?s gun-related homicide rate is drastically lower than that of the United States not only because guns are harder to purchase, but because ammunition is scarce, the writer points out. In one recent incident in a crime-plagued British neighborhood, for example, ?the gang had had to make its own bullets, which did not work well....?

In one recent year England and Wales experienced 39 fatalities from crimes involving firearms; the US had 12,000. In Britain, ?The firearms-ownership rules are onerous, involving hours of paperwork. You must provide a referee who has to answer nosy questions about the applicant?s mental state, home life (including family or domestic tensions) and their attitude towards guns. In addition to criminal-record checks, the police talk to applicants? family doctors and ask about any histories of alcohol or drug abuse or personality disorders.?

Some US gun owners argue that they might need firearms to fight a tyrannical government. But ?I don?t think America is remotely close to becoming a tyranny, and to suggest that it is is both irrational and a bit offensive to people who actually do live under tyrannical rule,? the writer responds.

Lottery burdens

Are you eager to win the next big lottery? BloombergBusinessWeek writer David Samuels offers the cautionary tale of Jack Whittaker, a contractor in Scott Depot, W.?Va., who 10 years ago found that his $1 Powerball lottery ticket had won him a $93 million payout after taxes.

Mr. Whittaker tried to do good with his bonanza, giving away a good portion to charitable groups, especially churches. But he still descended into alcohol addiction; was divorced by his wife; became tied up (by his own count) in some 460 legal actions; and lost his beloved granddaughter, on whom he had lavished piles of cash, to drug addiction. Before his lottery ?win,? Whittaker?s contracting business had afforded him a comfortable life. ?Nobody knew I had any money,? Whittaker said. ?All they knew was my good works.? His life back then, he notes sadly, ?was a lot easier.?

health and fitness: What Is Cosmetic Surgery

By Steven G. Levine

Cosmetic plastic surgery is preferred by individuals who prefer to boost their physical appearance and strengthen their self-esteem. This kind of surgery treatment is different from reconstructive surgery that's meant to repair or replace areas of the body which have been changed due to ailment, injury and other surgeries. Cosmetic surgery provides emotional and physical advantages; nevertheless, it may feature some risks. Due to this, it is vital for a patient to select a very skilled surgeon to do the process.

Functions of Cosmetic Plastic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is meant to replace or enhance bodily features which are deformed or undesirable. Compared to other types of surgical procedures, cosmetic surgery is extensive when it comes to areas and methods. The aim of this kind of process is usually achieved by getting rid of bone fragments or fat adding compounds including silicone so that fullness is made. This can also be performed by using chemical substances or injections which are designed to remove skin layers or paralyze different muscles in your body. Majority of cosmetic surgical procedures must be done in a hospital and patients can often recover in days or even weeks. Nonetheless, there are less unpleasant processes that can be performed in a doctor's clinic wherein the individual can also go back home right after the procedure.

Different Kinds of Cosmetic Surgical Treatments

Most parts of an individual's body can go through a cosmetic plastic surgery; however, it's the face that is the most common site. In the case of kids, they often go through a repair of a cleft palate or lip and ear-pinning process. There are several types of cosmetic surgery procedures that include rhinoplasty, mammoplasty, eyebrow lifts, breast reduction and also augmentation, chin surgery, scar reduction or even removal, otoplasty along with facelifts. Men often go for tummy tucks, hair loss transplants and also eyelid surgery. Both women and men may prefer liposuction procedures which can be done in an outpatient environment.

Significant Benefits of Cosmetic Surgery

People who undergo cosmetic plastic surgery such as those offered by Miami cosmetic surgeons, will often claim that they feel much better, gain more self-confidence and look youthful after their operation. This kind of surgical treatment is capable of correcting physical defects while allowing others to make social confidence which they never had. Treatments just like ear pinning can provide children the opportunity to suit themselves with their peer group and help save them from feeling humiliated which most children with deformities may suffer.

Points to consider When Wanting a Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is normally opted to delay or eliminate the aging signs that will speed up the natural process of aging. To deal with this, some people will undertake the procedure consistently. But, there are numerous procedures which had resulted in unnatural appearance and poor outcomes. Also, this kind of surgical procedure may also cost a lot of money. While there could be funding provided by some surgery offices, procedures which are more expensive can still cost a person a minimum of $15000. Before an individual chooses a cosmetic plastic surgery, he must talk with his physician all elements of the surgical procedure that include the procedure, complication rates as well as charges. Furthermore, it is also best if you plan for the process and recovery beforehand simply because some procedures may lead to complications that will need weeks or months of rest. In fact, there can be surgical treatments executed in a medical center setting that may come with some risks particularly in individuals with diabetic issues. Complications may vary from pain and inflammation to infections, neural damage, scarring as well as death. The pitfalls of getting problems from a cosmetic plastic surgery are very likely if it is conducted in a physician's clinic. That's the reason it's vital to select a very experienced surgeon who is known to conduct successful surgical procedures.

Holiday Pet Safety Tips ? Dr. Patrick Mahaney

This article originally appeared on my ongoing series of articles for?Flexcin International, Inc?as?Holiday Pet Safety Tips

?

Have you ever placed the last ornament on your tree, gazing admiringly at your work, only to realize Fido is running full speed ahead at your masterpiece? Or what about looking over to see Fluffy engulfed in menorah flames? Hopefully, neither of these situations has ever happened to you, but keep in mind that many of your favorite decorations can pose serious dangers for the animals in your home.

Here is a list of the top offending holiday decorations and the harm they can cause your pets:

Candles

Some pets are attracted to the aroma of scented candles (cinnamon, fig, vanilla ? yum!) and may be drawn to the flame (like a moth).? If lit candles are ingested,?hot wax will burn the mouth and tongue?and the waxy nature of candles can cause?digestive tract upset. If a pet knocks over a candle,?flammable household materials?and/or their?fur could ignite.

Lights

Strings of electric lights pose temptation to many pets, especially cats.? Severe?oral burns?and?life threatening shock?will occur from electrical cord bites.? Additionally, a pet?s limb or neck can be caught in a string of lights, causing a tourniquet effect on the limb or?strangulation?of the neck.

Garland/Tinsel

Consumption of garland or tinsel is especially treacherous for pets. Both can cause a linear foreign body, with one end of the strand anchored higher in the stomach or intestines and the free end traveling down the digestive tract.? The intestines will continually contract (peristalsis) and bunch up around the length of the strand, causing reduced blood flow and a ?sawing effect? on the inside of the intestines.? Ultimately, this can lead to?intestinal perforation.

Festive Plants

A variety of plants are associated with the winter holiday season, some toxic and others not.? Even if a plant is considered non-toxic, its ingestion could still make your pet sick.

Toxic to Cats & Dogs

  • Amaryllis
  • Holly
  • House Pine
  • Mistletoe (American or European)

Not Toxic to Cats & Dogs

  • Poinsettia
  • Christmas Cactus

Prioritize Pet Safety in Your Holiday Planning

Of course I?m not suggesting you be a Grinch and avoid holiday decorating, nor would I ever suggest leaving your animal friends out of the festivities. What I will suggest is you keep your pets safety in mind with these tips:

  • Only permit entry in rooms containing decorations in your presence.
  • Train your pets to avoid decor by using positive reinforcement. Divert their attention using pet-appropriate food treats or an exciting toy.
  • Use flameless candles.
  • Bind together strands of electric cords and apply a few sprays of a deterrent (Bitter Apple, vinegar, etc.).
  • If a guest brings a holiday plant into your home, inquire about its toxic potential by visiting theAPSCA Animal Poison Control.

PFT: 49ers lose WR Manningham to torn ACL

John Fox, Peyton ManningAP

The NFL Most Valuable Player award seems to be a two-man race heading into Week 17, with Vikings running back Adrian Peterson and Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning the contenders. Vikings coach Leslie Frazier has already gone on the record as saying there?s no doubt that Peterson is the MVP, and it?s not surprising that Fox has now come out to vocally support Manning.

Fox said at his press conference today that he believes Manning deserves the honor because Manning has had to adjust to a new team and new teammates and has made that adjustment flawlessly in his first season in Denver.

?Obviously I might be a little biased and with all due respect to everybody involved, I think what?s unique about Peyton . . . he?s done it in a new city with a new team,? Fox said. ?At that position, in my personal opinion, that?s what separates him from the rest of the field.?

Peterson and Manning each have one more game to attempt to impress the panel of 50 voters the Associated Press assembles to vote on the MVP award, but they appear to be neck and neck through 15 games of the season. Peterson, who has gained 1,898 yards this season, has a huge opportunity to bolster his case by surpassing the the 2,000-yard mark on Sunday, and maybe even breaking Eric Dickerson?s all-time record of 2,105 yards, while potentially leading the Vikings to the playoffs with a win over the Packers. Manning doesn?t have any high-profile statistical benchmarks to meet on Sunday, but he does have the opportunity to lead the Broncos to home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs, if they win on Sunday while the Texans lose.

My bet is that if Peterson tops 2,000 yards and the Vikings beat the Packers, Peterson gets the nod. If Peterson falls short and the Vikings lose, that will open the door to Manning winning the MVP for the record fifth time.

Afghan policewoman kills US adviser, police say

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? An Afghan policewoman shot and killed an American adviser outside the police headquarters in Kabul on Monday, a senior Afghan official said. The circumstances of the killing were not immediately clear but the shooting could be another insider attack by Afghans against their foreign allies.

A NATO command spokesman, U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Lester T. Carroll, said the shooter was taken into Afghan custody shortly after the incident. The slain adviser was a contractor but the name and nationality of the deceased were being withheld, Carroll said.

Deputy Police Chief Mohammad Daoud Amin said it has not been determined whether the American adviser's death was intentional or accidental. He said an investigation was under way and declined to give more details of the incident, which occurred in central Kabul on the compound housing the governor of the city and near a number of key ministries.

"We can confirm that a civilian police adviser was shot and killed this morning by a suspected member of the Afghan uniform. The suspected shooter is in Afghan custody," Carroll said. He said Afghan and NATO officials were still trying to confirm initial reports that the shooter was a policewoman.

The killing came just hours after an Afghan policeman shot five of his colleagues at a checkpoint in northern Afghanistan late Monday. The attacker then stole his colleague's weapons and fled to join the Taliban, said deputy provincial governor in Jawzjan province, Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani.

More than 60 international allies, including troops and civilian advisers, have been killed by Afghan soldiers or police this year, and a number of other insider attacks as they are known are still under investigations. NATO forces, due to mostly withdraw from the country by 2014, have speeded up efforts to train and advise Afghan military and police units before the pullout.

The surge in insider attacks is throwing doubt on the capability of the Afghan security forces to take over from international troops and has further undermined public support for the 11-year war in NATO countries.

In February, two U.S. soldiers -- Lt. Col. John D. Loftis and Maj. Robert J. Marchanti, died from wounds received during an attack by an Afghan policeman at the Interior Ministry in Kabul. The incident forced NATO to temporarily pull out their advisers from a number of ministries and police units and revise procedures in dealing with Afghan counterparts.

More than 50 Afghan members of the government's security forces also have died this year in attacks by their own colleagues. Taliban militants claim such attacks reflect a growing popular opposition to both foreign military presence and the Kabul government.

In Sunday's attack, Jawzjani, the provincial official, said the attacker was an Afghan policeman manning a checkpoint in Dirzab District who turned his weapon on five colleagues before fleeing to the militant Islamist group.

Riot police pets

Why don't they use riot police with the face masks as pet walkers like michonne did?

They haven't had any reason to yet. I feel that if any lurkers or anything like that are going to be used, it will be in the impending skirmish between the prison group and the Woodbery militia.

If we don't see anything like that, it is clearly the writers' choice, and it would appear that we are unlikely to see any such ingenuity in living vs living warfare.

It is a fantastic opportunity to see such wondrous and bizarre inventions, though. I really hope we do.

Can't help feeling that the Woodberry clan have the opportunity to use attack dogs, too.

Careful, schmareful. A loss, coulda woulda shoulda, but who cares? It's what happens in the next couple-three weeks that will likely define this season.

Missouri is really good where we are weak. Not unexpected. Now you have to see how we get off the mat.

Should be interesting to see how Groce handles this team if they continue to struggle with the 3.

Fought hard, but it was a mismatch up front. Good effort from Nnanna.

Out-muscled and the shots weren't falling, but we still had a chance. Disappointing loss, but not entirely discouraging, either.

We were dominated on the glass
    couldnt hit a 3
    shot poorly from the field
they had a good game in those areas.
it couldn't of been a worse case scenario.
does every team in the country do PED's, except us?

If that's as bad as it gets... things are looking up
how were we even in this game.
    true grit

    &........... we're watching

We didn't shoot well against a good team, and we lost. Not much more to it than that. Apparently people are surprised that our bigs got worked over by bigger and stronger players.

Can you believe that someone actually said that Gonzaga bigs were better?

Yup. I believe he also added " and it's not even close" too...

They should count Pressey's misses as assists, I swear the Mizzou marching orders were just to put it up and let their bigs get the put backs.

Gotta work on rebounding.....A LOT. Egwu played his guts out tonight I think considering what he was up against. Not sure why we were doing so much hedging on the high picks though. It killed us against Pressey.. Paul needs to let the game come to him when he isnt hitting his shot and I thought Groce should of played some of our bench guys a bit more like Langford and Henry so they could bang some. The refs let them play and that was not in our favor. Mizzou got away with quite a few over the backs but our guys have got to learn how to box their man out instead of standing in their area trying to out jump someone....The crap doesnt work against a good rebounding team like Mizzou. On to Auburn..

That's right. I forgot about that
    "Not even close"

OTOH. Someday, we'll have bigs too.
Combine what we have with some bigs who bite back and we're a top 5 team

Edit: Oh no... KSU kicking ass

It was really an entertaining game. I think BP3 was kind of dinged up. He went to the floor 2 or 3 times and was slow to get up.

Nice effort from Bertrand, maybe Egwu has finally figured out how to get a rebound. That would be a big help going forward. Needed more out of McLaurin. DJ isn't being consistent with his form on the jumper, needs to get that straightened out. We didn't play Pressey well at all, but he's a tough match for just about anybody. Missouri is a really good team.

He rolled an ankle in the first half and was fighting it the rest of the game. The announcers never once commented on it.

Hey, we shot the ball poorly. What else is there to say really? We are for real and were right there in that game even though we got killed on the glass and shot so poorly. We are competitive and the guys fight, regardless of the competition. If a loss can ever be encouraging, that was an encouraging loss.

Meh. Whatever. Go beat Auburn and Purdue and then get ready for OSU.

The only concerning part is the rebounding margin, however, despite being killed on the boards, we had a chance to win the game at the end.

One more thing, OSU and MSU aren't top 10 teams and Michigan is as dependent on the 3 as we are. My point is the top of the conference isn't going to run away from this team. I'm going on record with an 11-7 and possibly 12-6 B1G campaign.

Pressey was 3-19 from the field with 11 assists, I'm betting they had put-back layups or dunks on at least 12 of those misses so as far as I'm concerned Pressey had 23 assists. We can't let that happen.

Tough loss, but this team is really good. This game completely changed my opinion of Egwu.
